CapLinked Adds Recommendations, Expands Profiles
Manhattan Beach-based CapLinked, which operates an online platform for helping companies to manage investors and is headed by Eric M. Jackson, said this week that it has rolled out several new features for the site. CapLinked said that it now allows users to collect recommendations from other people they've done business with, and display them on a user profile; has expanded its user profiles; and added features to help meet other users of the site. UberMedia, Bleacher Report Team On Tweeting Contest
Pasadena-based UberMedia, the Twitter third party client software provider, and Bleacher Report, the online sports publishing site, said today that they've linked up to run a prize to award prizes to users who tweet photos of sports events. The two said they have launched the UberSports College Hoops contest, which will allow users to submit photos using Twidroyd or UberSocial showing themselves as the "ultimate college hoops fan". Interview with David Aronchick, Hark
Last week, we talked with Fouad ElNaggar of Redpoint Ventures about some of the interesting companies in Southern California. One of those he mentioned was Hark (www.hark.com), an online site which allows users to find and share sound bites and audio clips from movies and elsewhere. Two Local Firms Make WSJ Clean Technology List
The Wall Street Journal, at a conference in Santa Barbara this week, named its list of "Top 10" clean technology firms, naming two local companies to the list of firms with the "greatest potential to succeed." According to the WSJ, Burbank-based eSolar, the solar thermal power firm spun out of Idealab, and San Diego-based renewable algae fuels firm Sapphire Energy were among the top companies. eSolar was ranked third, and Sapphire Energy ranked number 10 on the list, which was based on amount of (More info...)

Pharmaron Finds $40M
Irvine-based Pharmaron, a provider of R&D services to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, said last week that it has raised $40M in a Series C funding round. The round came from DCM, Legend Capital, GL Capital Group, and others. The firm said the new funding will go to expand its discovery services offerings, preclinical GLP toxicology capabilities and GMP chemical synthesis services. Pharmaron's west coast headquarters is in Irvine, with east coast headquarters in Kentucky.

Demand Media Buys CoveritLive
Santa Monica-based Demand Media said this morning that it has acquired CoveritLive, a developer of a live blogging platform used to provide real time commentary, reader polling, and questions and answers on live events. Financial terms of the acquisitoin were not disclosed. Demand Media was already a strategic investor in CoveritLive. CraveOnline Partners With The Ring
Los Angeles-based CraveOnline, the male lifestyle content site owned by Evolve Media, said today that it has partnered with SEP, Inc, owner of boxing publication The Ring Magazine. CraveOnline said it will create a new boxing site for the publication, and also provide full media services, including sales efforts and working with marketers. Maxwell Technologies Scores $7.01M Battery Contract
San Diego-based Maxwell Technologies reports this morning that it has received a $7.01M contract from the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC), to develop advanced energy storage systems for power assist hybrid electric vehicles. USABC is a subsidiary of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC, a group owned by Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors and funded by U.S. DOE grants. Teradata Buys Aster Data
Teradata, a developer of data warehousing and marketing management tools, said this morning it is acquiring Aster Data Systems, a provider of advanced analytics tools. Teradata, which already owns 11 percent of Aster Data Systems, said it will pay an additional $263M for the remaining ownership interest in Aster Data. ShowUhow Names Marketing VP
San Diego-based ShowUhow, the developer of video product guides for e-commerce sites, said today that it has named Anthony 'Tony' Wyatt as its EVP Sales and Marketing. Wyatt joins the firm from Indyme Solutions. ShowUhow provides a service which creates online videos showing off products, along with associated technology, used by e-commerce sites and manufacturers to better sell or support their products.

CarsDirect Refreshes Website
In the latest makeover of one of the original, Web-based automotive sites, Los Angeles-based CarsDirect has updated its website. The firm said it has launched a "completely redesigned website" after months of research and testing. The site includes better navigation features, more research and in-depth specifications and reviews, articles, breaking automotive news, and more.
