Google Lets Users Block Sites
Search engine giant Google, in what might be a preview of a way for users to help filter out low quality web results, said Thursday that it has begun allowing user to block results from sites they do not want to see. Google--which said it is not yet using the data in search results, but will be looking at the data from the program--said the blocked sites will be linked to a user's Google account. CyberDefender Gets Into Online Backup
Los Angeles-based CyberDefender, the developer of Internet security software headed by Gary Guisenov, said Thursday that it has expanded into the online, cloud-based storage market. The firm said it has introduced a new, cloud storage and online backup servie, which it will offer both as a stand-alone and bundled product. The firm said it will offer up packages starting at $9.99 a month for backup.

Docufide Becomes Parchment
Docufide, which provides a service to transmit educational credentials and high school transcripts to colleges and universities, announced Thursday that it has renamed itself Parchment, Inc.. The firm has operations in Los Angeles but recently moved its headquarters to Arizona after a $4.5M funding round. The name change plans had been uncovered by socalTECH in February. Astute Medical Raises $13M
San Diego-based Astute Medical, a firm working on developing diagnostic test using protein biomarkers, said this week that it has raised $13M in a financing round. The round was a Series B extension. The funding came from Domain Associates, Delphi Ventures, De Novo Ventures and Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, all prior investors. The firm said the funding will go towards research, development, and validation.

LeisureLink Scores Colorado Resort
Pasadena-based LeisureLink, which develops online booking and distribution software for specialty lodging firms, announced today that it has signed on Mountain Resorts, based in Steamboat Springs Colorado, as a customer. LeisureLink said that Mountain Resorts has deployed its system across its entire 17 property inventory. Financial details of the win were not disclosed.

Forbes has released its latest list of the world's top billionaires, showing that technology continues to build substantial fortunes in the world. Bill Gates continues to be the wealthiest American on the list at number two, with a fortune of $56B; Larry Ellison was number 5 with $39.5 billion, and Google's Larry Page were number 24 and 25, respectively, with $19.8 billion each. PowerGenix In Traffic Light Deployment
San Diego-based PowerGenix, the developer of rechargeable Nickel-Zinc (NiZn) battery technology, said today that it has inked a deal to use its batteries in traffic light backups. PowerGenix said it has inked a deal with PSI Acquisition LLC to supply its battery cells for an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) used to back up traffic lights. Size of the deal was not disclosed. Evolve Media Launches Video Ad Division Sales
Los Angeles-based Evolve Media Corp., the parent firm of Gorilla Nation and AtomicOnline, said today that it has launched sales efforts for its new video advertising division, SpringBoard Video. The online advertising firm said it has developed its own, proprietary ad-supported video player technology, which it is delivering to over 160 mid-tail web publishers. AeroVironment Q3 Revenues Up
Monrovia-based AeroVironment, the maker of unmanned aerial vehicles and electric vehicle chargers, reported its quarterly results this week, saying that its year-over-year revenues increased 39 percent for its third quarter. The publicly held firm saw increases in both its unmanned aerial vehicle business as well as electric vehicle charger business. Aerovironment said it has now installed more than 1,000 charging docks for electrical vehicles in the quarter, across 18 states.
