BetterWorks Dangles Prizes For Developers
Santa Monica-based BetterWorks, the employee fringe benefits startup headed by Paige Craig, looks to be ramping its employee recruitment effort, and is sponsoring a developer "hack-fest" this weekend at Coloft. According to the firm, it is awarding $3,000 as a first place prize for the developer who creates a "technical masterpiece" around making the workplace better, whether that is a project management, customer relationship management system, or similar. Mobile Roadie Powers Soccer App
Los Angeles-based Mobile Roadie, the mobile app development firm, said Thursday that it has released a new application from the soccer team Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The firm said its app for the German pro association soccer team provides news, push notifications, videos, schedules, match results, team profiles, and more. Terms of the win were not announced.

MyLife Sees Jump In Traffic, Users
Los Angeles-based MyLife, the online people search and networking site run by Jeff Tinsley, bragged Thursday that it has seen a recent bump in its traffic and unique users. The firm said its traffic increased 20 percent month-over-month, and hit 16.44 million unique users. The firm said its growth has been coming from a "mature crowd", with more than 65 percent of its members over the age of 35. SRS Labs Extends Deal With VIZIO
Santa Ana-based SRS Labs, the developer of surround sound and other audio technology, said this week that it has extended a deal with LCD HDTV firm VIZIO. SRS Labs said that the firm is in a new, multi-year agreement to provide VIZIO with a portfolio of its audio enhancement and surround sound technology. Financial details of the license were not announced.

Electro Rent Buys Test Equipment Firm
Van Nuys-based Electro Rent, the provider of electronic test equipment rentals and leasing, said Thursday that it has purchased Equipment Management Technology, a fellow electronic test equipment company, out of bankruptcy. Electro Rent said it pay $11.1M in cash for the firm, via a private, U.S. Bankruptcy court sale. Equipment Management Technology is based in Las Vegas, and rents, sells, and leases used electronic test equipment.

On-Ramp Wireless Taps Smart Grid Expert As Advisor
San Diego-based On-Ramp Wireless said this week that it has tapped a smart grid expert for its strategic advisory board. According to On-Ramp Wireless, it has added Jim Kelly, most recently Senior Vice President of Transmission & Distribution for Southern California Edison (SCE). Kelly also served as VP of Engineering & Technical Services at SCE, On-Ramp Wireless said Kelly brings 38 years of industry experience to the firm's advisory board. On Ramp Wireless is backed by GE.

Kofax Wins BPO Firm
Irvine-based Kofax, the developer of document capture products, said earlier this week that it has been selected by an un-named, leading business process outsourcing (BPO) firm. Kofax said the deal, worth more than $1.5 million, is for its products in the real estate, mortgage, asset management, and financial services industries. The company's products will be used for scanning and processing approximately 58 million mortgage applications and loan documents each year.
