Caltech Engineers Use Legos, Google Smartphone For Smart Petri Dish
Researchers at the California Institute of Technology reported last week that they have created a "smart petri dish" which uses Google smart phones and Lego blocks, to automatically monitor cell growth in petri dishes. In a paper presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the Caltech grad students said they created a system--assembled out of a commercially available Google smart phone and Lego building blocks--which automatically tracks the growth of cultures in pet (More info...)

TrueCar Backed By Another Investor
Another investor has surfaced in the latest funding round for Santa Monica-based TrueCar, the online automotive pricing and research firm headed by Scott Painter. According to Colorado-based Keating Capital, it participated in a $50M, common stock financing round in TrueCar which closed on September 26th. TrueCar had earlier said in early September that it had raised a total of $200M in a combination of debt and equity financing, but had not included Keating Capital in its list of new investors. Mobile Roadie Launches Preview App
Los Angeles-based Mobile Roadie, the developer of mobile applications for celebrities and brands, has released a new app which helps its customer preview their applications before actual release. According to Mo bile Roadie, its new Mobile Roadie Connect product allows its customers who are building applications, to see what their app will look like, test out features, and more, before actual release of that software to customers. Predixion Software Updates Product
San Juan Capistrano-based Predixion Software, which is venture backed by DFJ Frontier, Miramar Venture Partners and Palomar Ventures, said today that it has upgraded its flagship predictive analytics software. The firm said its updated Predixion Insight 2.0 software adds enterprise collaboration features, interactive visualization, and--interestingly enough--an on-premise version of the cloud software. Boingo Wireless Selected By LG Uplus
Los Angeles-based Boingo Wireless, the provider of a network of international Wi-Fi hotspots, has scored South Korean mobile phone operator LG Uplus, in a deal to provide Wi-Fi access for LG Uplus customers. The two said that the three year, platform services agreement calls for LG U+ to license Boingo's authentication software on Android platforms, in addition to agreeing to roaming terms on Boingo's network. Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals Finds CEO
Laguna Niguel-based Inspiration Biopharmaceuticals, a developer of treatments for hemophilia, announced today that it has appointed John P. Butler as its new CEO. Butler replaces current CEO Michael Griffith, who becomes Chief Scientific Officer and President. Butler was most recently at Genzyme Corporation, and has served at Amgen and Hoffmann-La Roche.

Netlist Boosts Board With Venture Capital Vet
Irvine-based Netlist, the developer of memory subsystems for the datacenter and high performance computing market, said today that it has added Claude Leglise to its board of directors. Leglise is the co-founder of ClearSpot Energy, a solar energy services company, and had previously served as a venture capitalist at WI Harper Group. Leglise also has more than 23 years of experience at Intel Corporation, with his last position being Vice President of Intel's venture capital arm, Intel Capital.

Carlsbad-based Medsphere Systems, which develops open source healthcare software, said today that it has named John Bright as Vice President of Sales and marketing. Bright joins the company from Henry Schein Medical Systems, and also has served at Health Research Sciences, BrightCAM Solutions, and Mountain Medical Technologies. Medsphere develops a suite of clinical support products and services focused on electronic health record systems.
