SkinMedica Buys Makeup Firm
Carlsbad-based SkinMedica, a venture backed cosmaceuticals firm developing skin care products, said Monday that it has acquired Colorescience, a makeup company developing science-based mineral makeups. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed. Novatel Powers New Verizon Jetpack
San Diego-based Novatel Wireless is powering the new Verizon Jetpack, verizon's new 4G LTE mobile hotspot product, Verizon and Novatel said Monday. The companies announced the deal at CES. The Verizon Jetpack - MiFi 4620L creates a personal Wi-Fi hotspot using a Verizon 4G LTE connection. The new device supports up to 10 devices, with downloads of 5 to 12 megabits per second, and uploads of 2 to 5 Mbps. The two have not released pricing on the new device yet.

Thousands Gather To Honor Surfline's Collins
Thousands of people gathered over the weekend to honor Sean Collins, the founder of Huntington Beach-based Surfline, the online information site focused on wave forecasts, surfing, and other sports.

EdgeCast Extends With Telecom Carriers
Santa Monica-based EdgeCast, the content delivery network (CDN) provider, said this morning that it has launched a "Licensed CDN" program, after it successfully built out a production content delivery network for a major carrier, and signed a deal with another. EdgeCast said it recently designed, developed, and deployed a CDN for a tier one U.S. telecommunications carrier, and also signed a deal to power a CDN carrier with Asian telecom Pacnet. NMA Group Sold To Corbis
Los Angeles-based NMA Group, which provides product placement into movies and television shows for electronics and other firms, is being acquired by Corbis, the digital media licensing firm owned by Microsoft founder Bill Gates. MicroPower Lands Funding From Motorola
San Diego-based MicroPower Technologies, the developer of wireless video products used for the video surveillance market, has scored a strategic investment from Motorola Solutions Venture Capital. According to Motorola, the funding came as part of a $6.5M funding round for MicroPower, its first institutional round. Wemo Media Gets $2M For TheBlu
Los Angeles-based Wemo Media, the company led by Neville Spiteri which is developing the interactive ocean environment TheBlu, said today that it has raised $2M in a seed funding round for the firm. Tustin-based Uptake Medical, the developer of treatments for emphysema led by R. King Nelson, announced today that it has raised a Series C funding round. Size of the round was not announced. VIZIO Expands Into PCs
Irvine-based VIZIO, the maker of LCD HDTVs, is expanding its reach into the personal computing world, announcing this morming that it has launched five, new personal computers under its brand. VIZIO said it will be launching the new PCs, running Windows 7, this spring. The new line of PCs include a notebook, two "thin" notebooks, and two all-in-one computers. Los Angeles-based film, TV, and entertainment site HitFix said today that it has snagged the former General Manager for Digital for The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Boyce, as its new Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategy. Smith Micro Wins Sprint
Aliso Viejo-based Smith Micro Software, which develops software for the mobile market, said today that its Mobile Network Director product has been selected by Sprint. Smith Micro's software is used to manage traffic between 3G, 4G, and Wi-Fi networks, handling network traffic on subscriber devices as they move between coverage areas. Myricom Adds Distributor
Arcadia-based Myricom, the developer of 10-Gigabit Ethernet adapters for the high performance computing market, said today that it has added a new distributor for its products. Myricom said it has tapped New Jersey-based Info X to distribute its products. Info X distributes electronics products to over 2000 value added resellers.
