Avalon Ventures Raises $201.6M As Part Of $250M Venture Fund
In what is a rarity nowadays for a Southern California venture capital fund, San Diego- and Cambridge-based venture capital firm Avalon Ventures has just closed on $201.6M in commitments for a $250M fund, Avalon Ventures X. The funding was disclosed via a regulatory filing Thursday. Avalon has backed such companies as Zynga, Ambit Biosciences, AnayptsBio, Awarepoint, Cheezburger, Inogen, MOGL, Ortiva Wireless, and others. FollowMaid Helps Clean Up, Manage Twitter Followers
A new online service, FollowMaid, is looking to neaten up your Twitter account, by automatically pruning out spammers and find new people to follow by keyword. The new service--created by Pacific Palisades software development firm Etronica--is aimed at both individuals and businesses. Qualcomm Invests $100K In MightyText
MightyText, a Silicon Valley startup which develops Android applications to let users send SMS messages from their computer via the cloud, and syncs those messages between an Android phone and computer, has scored $100,000 from San Diego's Qualcomm. Qualcomm said it awarded the venture financing to MightyText as the top prize in the North American Regional Semi-Finals of its 2012 QPrize venture investment competition. FreeConferenceCall.com Expands To Brazil
Long Beach-based free conference calling services provider FreeConferenceCall.com is expanding further internationally, saying this week that its services are now available in Brazil. The new service gives users in Brazil free conference calling, including international conferencing with other countries in its network. FreeConferenceCall.com says it now has 26 countries included in its service.

MaxLinear Wins European TV Manufacturer
Carlsbad-based RF integrated circuit developer MaxLinear reported a win in Europe today, with European TV manufacturer Vestel Elektronik. MaxLinear said that Vesel will use one of its chips for its latest generation of hybrid televisions, targeted at the European LED and LCD television market. Financial impact of the deal and anticipated shipment volumes were not announced. Vestel is using MaxLinear's ML601 radio chip, used for analog front-ends.
