Illumina Wins Favorable Ruling In Patent Suit
San Diego-based life sciences equipment maker Illumina said Thursday that it has received a favorable outcome in its patent litigation against Life Technologies. Illumina said that a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California granted it summary judgement, saying that its sequencing systems do not infringe U.S. Patent Nos. 5,616,478; 5,958,698 and 6,001,568, which are owned by Life Technologies. Accelerator/Incubator Trend Spreads To LA Schools
Southern California--and particularly, Los Angeles--has become somewhat of a startup accelerator/incubator hub over the last couple of years, as more than a dozen startup accelerators, incubators, coworking spaces, and more have set up shop in the area. AdExcite Merges With Q1Media
El Segundo-based video advertising network AdExcite has merged with online display ad firm Q1 Media, the two companies said Wednesday. Financial details of the merger were not disclosed. The firm said the new company will operate as Q1Media, and use AdExcite's brand name for its video and mobile video product lines. Powerwave Slashes Staff In Santa Ana
Powerwave Technologies, a developer of wireless antennas and amplifiers, is cutting 182 employees in Santa Ana, according to a WARN notice from the state. The layoffs were first uncovered by the OC Register. Powerwave has been in bankruptcy since January.

TestFlight Launches Analytics Service

Sapphire Energy In Commercial Supply Deal With Tesoro
San Diego-based algae-based, biofuels producer Sapphire Energy has inked a commercial agreement with oil producer Tesoro, the company said Wednesday. According to Sapphire Energy, Tesoro will purchase crude oil from its "Green Crude Farm" in Columbus, New Mexico. A new, San Diego-based startup, Apmetrix, said yesterday that it has launched a new, software-development kit aimed at providing analytics to videogame developers. TowerJazz Ties With Avago
Newport Beach-based TowerJazz, the semiconductor foundry operator, has tied with analog component maker Avago, the two said this morning. According to the two companies, they are in an expanded, straegic collaboration where Avago's next generation products will use TowerJazz's SiGe BiCMOS technology platform. FInancial details of the partnership were not disclosed. Avago is already using TowerJazz for its existing, 10Gbps small form factor pluggable optical transceivers (SFPs).
