Local Clean Energy Business Plan Contest Awards $160,000
A local, clean energy business plan competition started by the California Insitute of Technology (Caltech), the University of Southern California (USC), and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has awarded $160,000 in prizes in its latest competition. NTS Tests NASA Satellite
Calabasas-based National Technical Systems, the test and engineering services provider, said Wednesday that it has been providing the qualification testing for a NASA lunar satellite. NTS said its completed a series of qualification tests on NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), which is scheduled for launch in late summer. X1 Discovery Secures Backing From Investors
Pasadena-based X1 Discovery, the developer of enterprise e-discovery and search tools, has some new funding in hand, and has been ramping its efforts in the market. Numecent Lands $13.6M For Cloud Software Technology
Irvine-based Numecent has raised $13.6M in a funding round, the firm announced today, for its "cloudpaging" software, which helps deliver Microsoft Windows applications into the cloud. According to Numecent, the funding was led by T-Venture, the venture capital arm of Deutsche Telekom. Los Angeles-based social, celebrity advertising startup Adly confirmed the company's recent $2M funding round today, officially announcing the funding from GRP Partners and Siemer Ventures. Adly, which is led by Walter Delph, develops a social advertising platform which helps harness the power of celebrity to help brands engage with consumers via social media. SnapMD Adds Green Dot Investor To Advisory Board
Los Angeles-based telemedicine startup SnapMD, which is looking to allow doctors and other healthcare providers to help patients via the web, has tapped a local investor for its advisory board. SnapMD said that Brian C. Smith was a founding shareholder of Health Net, Qmedtrix and GreenDot Financial, and is currently Executive Vice President at Verisk Health. YouMail Updates iPhone App, Enhances Greetings
YouMail, the developer of enhanced voicemail applications and services, has released what it calls a major update to its iPhone app. According to the Irvine-based company, the release revolves around improvements to the company's greetings, the personalized voicemail greetings which have been a hallmark of the service. YouMail said the update makes the selection of greetings simpler and more intuitive.

Amazon Gives Nod To Five Series
Amazon Studios. the SoCal effort by Internet giant to develop and produce its own, original content, said this morning that it has given the green light to five series. Amazon said that comedies Alpha House and Betas, plus kids pilots Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf have all been given the green light to begin production on a full series of episodes for Amazon Prime Instant Video. BuzzFeed Partners With CNN, Sets Up Studio In Los Angeles
Online viral news and media site BuzzFeed is further expanding its operations in the Los Angeles area, and has set up a "social studio" in Los Angeles to help "influencers, thinkers and celebrities" to create videos for the social web. The new studio comes in conjunction with a new partnership announced with CNN, around a new online channel, CNNBuzzFeed. olloclip Debuts New iPhone App
Huntington Beach-based olloclip, the developer of the lens systems for the iPhone and iPod touch, is expanding into software, saying today that it has launched a new photo and video app designed to enhance the company's clip-on-lenses. Broadcom Rolls Out Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Chips
Irvine-based Broadcom rolled out two new chips today, including both a single-chip Wi-Fi product, and a Bluetooth system-on-a-chip. Broadcom's new Wi-Fi system-on-a-chip is part of its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) portfolio, and is aimed at low power consumer products. Lastline Debuts Malware Analysis Software
Santa Barbara-based Lastline, a developer of malware defense software for business, said today that it has debuted a new product. Lastline said its Previct analyst software is a malware analysis system, which provides threat analysis and forensic teams with visibility into malicious components. Lastline said its new software is build on the Anubis and Wepawet platforms. Pricing on the new product was not announced.

MaxLinear Wins Reference Design With STMicroelectronics
Carlsbad-based radio-frequency and mixed signal integrated circuits developer MaxLinear reported a design win with STMicroelectronics this morning, as part of a set-top box reference design aimed at Latin America. MaxLinear said its tuner-modular components are part of a design aimed at digital television efforts in Latin America, and includes an integrated set-top box and software platform. MaxLinear's ISDB-T tuner-demodulator chip is being used in the design.

Amgen Ties With Astellas To Tackle Japan
Thousand Oaks-based biotech Amgen announced today that it has linked with Astellas Pharma, in a deal to reach the Japanese market with new medicines. According to the two, they are in a strategic alliance where they will provide new medicines to address the unmet medical needs of Japanese patients. The two said the first part of the alliance will focus on the co-development and co-commercialization in Japan of five Amgen pipeline medicines, including four biologics and one small molecule.
