OpenAirplane Targets Los Angeles With Airplane Rental Service
Tech-savvy users who like services like Zipcar, Uber, RelayRides, and Car2Go are used to being able to now rent and find cars by the hour or day in areas like Los Angeles. So it's no surprise that airplane pilots are getting their own version of those services, targeted at letting pilots rent airplanes by smartphone, tablet, or computer. Oculus VR Gets $16M For Virtual Reality Gaming Headset
Irvine-based Oculus VR, a developer of a virtual reality headset for gaming enthusiasts, said Monday that it has raised $16M in nan investment round. The round includes Spark Capital and Matrix Partners. Oculus VR is headed by Brendan Iribe, the former Chief Product Officer at Gaikai; the firm's founder is Palmer Luckey, who got his start developing virtual reality systems at USC's Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) in the Mixed Reality lab. Esri Powers uKnow.com's Family Locator Service
Redlands-based Esri is continuing to make inroads into the Internet startup market, and has been tapped to power the family location services of uKnow.com. uKnow said today that it is partnering with Esri to use that company's geographical information systems technology in a new, family locator service called uKnowLocate. Fisker Automotive Burnt Through $1.4 Billion
Anaheim-based Fisker Automotive, the troubled electric car maker, has now burnt through $1.4 billion dollars in private and public funds, according to Reuters. The amount of capital invested in Fisker makes the company the highest profile flameout ever in Southern California's startup history, far surpassing the mere $375M in venture capital raised of of prior record holder Amp'd Mobile from back in 2007. Demand Media's Designs.com Debuts To Power New gTLDs
Santa Monica-based Demand Media announced the launch of a new service, Designs.com, which it says wil lhelp generic Top Level Domain registrants create new websites. Demand Media explained athat Designs.com will help users create their own websites on the new gTLDs, offering up professional templates and online sites tied with the new gTLDs, such as .ARCHITECT, .DENTIST, .SOCIAL, and .FAN. Fullscreen Gets Funding For YouTube Network
Fullscreen, the online entertainment video site headed by George Strompolos, announced this morning that it has raised a round of Series A funding. Size of the funding was not announced. The round came from The Chernin Group along with Comcast Ventures and WPP. According to FullScreen, the new funding will go towards domestic and intentional expansion, in the areas of technology, audience development and sales. Salka Finds Backing For Renewable Energy Effort
San Diego-based Salka Corp. said this morning that it has scored funding from a number of investors, to help invest in renewable energy projects. Salka said it will acquire, develop, and construct wind and solar projects throughout North America, with the backing of Wofi Capital, a Gulf-based family office. Salka said it is led by Jiddu Tapia, most recently head of North American wind development at global wind energy firm Gamesa Technology Corp. PathCentral Adds Penn Medicine
Irvine-based PathCentral said today that it has added Penn Medicine to its online information exchange and consultation forums. PathCentral said that Penn will participate in its PathCentral Pathology Network, which lets physicians upload case files and gain reviews from other pathologists. Everbridge Signs Medical Center In Nevada
Glendale-based Everbridge, which supplies communications and mass notification products, said today that it has signed up a new customer. Everbridge said that Renown Regional Medical Center, which serves the Reno, Nevada area, has signed on as a customer of the firm, using Everbridge for communications across two hospitals, three emergency room centers, nine imaging centers and over 20 medical group urgent care centers. Imprimis Pharmaceuticals Licenses IP
San Diego-based Imprimis Pharmaceuticals said this morning that it has licensed a set of intellectual property assets, from Buderer Drug Company. Financial details of the licensing deal were not announced. Imprimis said it is developing innovations based on technology from the compounding pharmacy operations of Buderer. Imprimis said it is in the process of filing for a patent on those new IP assets. The company did not say what segment of the market the new assets would target.
