XPRIZE Launches New, $2M Ocean Health Prize
XPRIZE, the nonprofit organization which has been using large dollar prize competitions to spur innovation in a wide range of areas, has booted up a brand new, $2M prize around ocean health, the group said this week. Covario Bolsters Advisory Board
San Diego-based Covario, the search agency and search marketing technology provider, is bolstering its advisors today, saying it has added Bloomberg TV host and former Kodak CMO Jeffrey Hayzlett to its advisory board. NetSol Sets New CFO
Calabasas-based IT services provider NetSol Technologies has hired a new, Chief Financial Officer at the company, the company said this week. According to NetSol, it has named Roger Almond as CFO, and has moved former CFO Boo-Ali Siddiqui to the Chief Accounting Officer position. Siddiqui will also continue to serve as CFO of NetSol's Pakistani subsidiary. Almond was previously at Grant Thornton LLP and at Pickard & Green. Core Innovation Capital Backs Wipit
Los Angeles-based venture investor Core Innovation Capital is backing mobile payments provider Wipit, in a Series A funding, the companies said this morning. Size of the investment was not announced. As part of the funding, Arjan Schutte, Managing Partner at Core Innovation Capital, will join Wipit's board of directors. Wipit is also based in Los Angeles. MicroPower Technologies Launches New Infrared Camera
San Diego-based security technology developer MicroPower Technologies has rolled out a new product, a new, infrared camera which can wirelessly send its images up to a half mile away. The venture-backed startup--which is backed by Karmel Capital, Motorola and the Tech Coast Angels--said its new Helios IR camera consumes less than 1/10th the power of standard, industry cameras, and is powered by solar energy and a lithium battery. CheckAlt Wins Colorado Credit Union
Los Angeles-based CHeckAlt, the mobile check deposit startup let by Shai Stern, has scored a win at a Colorado credit union. According to Pikes Peak Credit Union, which serves Colorado Springs, it has tapped into CheckAlt, iParse, and CU Wireless for mobile deposit capture. Panasonic Avionics Ties With Intelsat On In-Flight Wi-Fi
Panasonic Avionics, the arm of Panasonic which develops in-flight wireless equipment, said today that it is in a deal with Intelsat to provide coverage and capacity for its in-flight Wi-Fi services. Panasonic Avionics, which is based in Anaheim, said it will use Intelsat's 33e satellite to cover airplanes traveling from Europe to South East Asia and Europe to North Asia. Broadcom Wins D-Link For Wi-Fi Access Point Design
Irvine-based chip maker Broadcom announced a design win this morning, saying that D-Link has selected its processors and systems-on-a-chip for a new, Wi-Fi enterprise access point. Broadcom said that D-Link will use its Broadcom StrataGX and 5G Wi-Fi systems-on-a-chip to power the new, 802.11ac bWi-Fi access point. Shipment volumes and expected financial impact were not announced.
