Accelrys Buys QUMAS
San Diego-based life sciences software maker Accelrys said Monday that it has acquired QUMAS, an Irish developer of cloud-based and on-premise enterprise compliance software for the life sciences industry. Accelrys said it paid approximately $50M in cash for QUMAS, which it says had revenues of $15.2M in 2011 and $19.3M in revenues in 2012. EdgeCast Acquired By Verizon
Los Angeles-based content delivery network operator EdgeCast has been acquired by Verizon, to help bolster Verizon's Digital Media Services, Verizon said this morning. Financial terms of the deal were not announced, but the deal is reported to be worth around $390M. Verizon said it will integrate EdgeCasts'a capabilities into its offerings, and will use it to further improve its capabilities. Verizon said it was advised by LionTree Advisors in the deal. Former Napster COO Dies In Bicycle Crash
Milton Olin, the former COO of Napster, has died as the result of a bicycle crash early Sunday afternoon involving a police car, according to multiple reports. According to those reports, Olin was struck on Mulholland Highway in Calabasas. Olin served as COO of Napster from 2000 to 2002, and also had previously served at Altschul & Olin LLP, FirstLook.com, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP, Polygram, A&M Records, among other companies. Inktank Links With Server Manufacturer
Los Angeles-based storage software developer Inktank has linked up with Servergy, a developer of power optimized, data center servers, to create a platform for large scale storage applications, the two said this morning. According to the two, they have created a combined reference design which uses Inktank's Ceph storage software with Servergy's servers, which can be used as the basis of an expandable, large scale cloud storage platform. Qualcomm Leads Investment In Practice Fusion
The venture arm of San Diego-based Qualcomm, Qualcomm Ventures is the lead investor in a new round of funding for healthcare technology company Practice Fusion, the companies announced this morning. Accordin to Practice Fusion, it raised $15M in new funding as part of a Series D extension funding. The round was led by Qualcomm Ventures, and brings Practice Fusion's Series D funding to $85M. Adaptive Medias Buys StartEngine's Ember
Irvine-based online advertising firm Adaptive Medias is announcing this morning that it has acquired Ember, one of the companies incubated out of the StartEngine startup accelerator in Los Angeles. Financial terms of the buy were not announced. Ember was a developer of real time, programmatic bidding software for the advertising industry, and used machine learning algorithms and contextual and semantic software engines for online advertising bidding. Clearlake Capital Rolls Up Three Companies Into Calero Software
Santa Monica-based private equity investor Clearlake Capital Group has rolled up three companies into a new company called Calero Software, the company announced today. Clearlake Capital said that Calero is made up of the business operations of Veramark Technologies, PINNACLE, and Movero. Broadcom Adds Support For Chinese Location Satellite System
Irvine-based chip maker Broadcom announced a new chip this morning, which supports the new, Chinese BeiDou satellite location system. According to Broadcom it snew BCM47531 Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) chip supports GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, SBAS and BeiDou all simultaneously. All of those satellite systems are used for determining a user's location. Broadcom said the addition of BeiDou will help improve its navigation accuracy, particularly in urban settings. CareFusion Invests $100M In Israeli Company
San Diego-based medical device maker CareFusion said this morning that it has invested $100M in an Israeli medical device company, Caesarea Medical Electronics (CME). Caesarea makes infusion pump systems. CareFusion said the investment will give it a 40 percent, minority stake in the Israeli maker of infusion and syringe pumps. CareFusion said that, as part of the investment agreement, it has the right to make additional investments in Caesarea--including becoming the majority owner of CME.

QLogic Names New CEO
Aliso Viejo-based server and storage networking equipment maker QLogic said this morning that it has named Prasad Rampalli as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Rampalli was most recently Senior Vice President, Cross Business Unit Engineering at EMC. As part of the appointment, QLogic said that Rampalli will also join the company's board of directors. Interim CEO Jean Hu will shift back to her position as Senior Vice President and CFO; Hu had been appointed Interim CEO in May. QLogic (More info...)

ValueClick Partners With Twitter
Westlake Villlage-based ValueClick has inked a partnership deal with Twitter, to help marketers reach Twitter's audience through Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts, the company announced Friday. According to ValueClick, it is integrating Twitter's services into its 1:1 personalized marketing solution. Financial details of the deal were not announced. ValueClick operates a number of online marketing and advertising businesses.
