Moviepilot Hits Hiring Accelerator As Focus Shifts To LA
Los Angeles-based Moviepilot, the online film review and publishing site which recently sold off its German operations, has hit the hiring accelerator here in Los Angeles as it has shifted its plans to here in the U.S. According to Aaron Kelly, Director of Content and Community, the company is looking for writers, video producers, social media mavericks, marketeers and ultra passionate movie fans to help the company grow from what is just fifteen people at the moment in LA. SpinMedia Buys Death and Taxes
Los Angeles-based SpinMedia said today that it has acquired Death and Taxes, an online magazine focused on indie music news, pop culture, politics, and entertainment. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. SpinMedia said that Death and Taxes sees around 1 million unique visitors a month.

Activision Sued By Former Dictator Manuel Noriega
Santa Monica-based videogame maker Activision has been sued by former Panama dictator Manual Noriega, over his depection in the game "Call of Duty: Black Ops II". Noriega is suing Activision Blizzard over what he says is using his name and likeness without his permission. Noriega rules Panama from 1983 until 1989, when he was unseated by the United States in a military invasion. The lawsuit was filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Edico Genome Finds $10M For Gene Sequencing Chips
San Diego-based Edico Genome, a developer of semiconductor specifically aimed at genome mapping, has raised $10M in a Series A funding, the company announced this morning. According to the company, the funding was led by Qualcomm Ventures, and also included Axon Ventures and angel investor Greg Lucier (Life Technologies). 3TEN8 Gets $250K
3TEN8, a company which is developing software to help mobile network operators visualize and manage their network performance, and which was part of both LaunchpadLA and the SAM Precellerator Programs in Los Angeles, has raised $250,000 in funding. The seed funding came from the Citrix Startup Accelerator Seed Program. 3TEN8 is now participating in the twelve month Citrix program in Silicon Valley.

Renovate America Finds $50M For Clean Energy Financing
San Diego-based Renovate America, which provides financing for residential, clean energy projects, said it has raised $50M in equity from both new and existing investors. Renovate America said the round was led by Valor Equity Partners, and also included Macquarie, RockPort Capital and Spring Creek. Pulse Electronics Loses CEO
San Diego-based electronics components provider Pulese Electronics reported late Wednesday that its Chairman and CEO, Ralph E. Faison, has resigned. The company said it has appointed Alan H. Benjamin as Interim CEO of the company. Benjamin was the company's Chief Operating Officer. According to Pulse, its board has launched a search for a permanent CEO. In a prepared statement, Faison said it was the "right time" for a new CEO at the company.

Kofax Wins $3.5M Deal
Irvine-based Kofax, the provider of document capture and related products, reported late Wednesday that it has won a $3.5M deal with a Fortune 1000 company. According to Kofax, the un-named, information storage and management provider is expanding its existing Kofax software installation. Kofax said the customer paid $3.0M in software licenses and over $500,000 in maintenance fees.
