Amgen Cuts 300 In San Francisco
Thousand Oaks-based biotech Amgen is cutting 300 jobs in San Francisco, as part of a shutdown of the South San Francisco operations of subsidiary Onyx Pharmaceuticals, according to a memo leaked from the company on Tuesday. Amgen plans to transfer workers in San Francisco back to its Thousand Oaks headquarters. Amgen acquired Onyx Pharmaceuticals in 2013, in a $10.4 billion deal. Onyx Pharmaceuticals develops treatments for multiple myelomas.

Snapchat Aims At Live Sports Broadcasting
Think Snapchat is only for swapping disappearing messages? The startup--which already has been trying to stake a claim in the news discovery business--now is also apparently trying to get into the live sports broadcasting area. According to a report, which cites multiple, media executives, says that Snapchat is working on media rights deals with NCAA, Turner, and others to feature live sports in its streams. Prevoty Picks Up $8M For Secure Application Software
Los Angeles-based Prevoty, a develops of software toolsets used to provide runtime protection of applications, has raised $8M in a Series A funding round, the company said today. The funding was led by US Venture Partners, and also included Plus Capital, Double M Capital, Core Ventures Group, Inventures Group, Daher Capital, Digi Venture Fund and Karlin Ventures. Cinq Music Finds Funding
Santa Monica-based Cinq Music,  which helps music companies distribute their music digitally, through mobile, and physical channels, has raised a round of funding, according to GoDigital Media Group, the investor in the company. Size of the funding was not disclosed. GoDigital said that Cinq Music will use the funding to finance catalog acquisition, for advances to artists, and accelerate development of its cloud-based technology. Cinq Music is led by Barry Daffurn.

March Capital Partners Backs E8 Security
Santa Monica-based March Capital Partners, the venture capital investment firm led by Jim Armstrong, Sumant Mandal, Gregory Milkin, and Jamie Montgomery, is the lead investor in a new cyber security startup, E8 Security. E8 Security said Tuesday that it had raised $9.8M in a Series A funding, for its cyber security analytics software, used to help detect cyber attacks. MamaBear Buys KidNotice
Santa Monica-based MamaBear, which develops a mobile parenting app, said Tuesday that it has acquired KidNotice, in an asset deal. KidNotice is a developer of an app that allows parents to privately share emergency and personal information about children with other parents caring for their children. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. MamaBear said the deal included both the assets and proprietary intellectual property of KidNotice.

BASF Buys Nanowire Technology From Seashell Technology
San Diego-based Seashell Technology, a developer of nanotechnology in the nanowire area, has sold the technology, patents, and other rights to its silver nanowire technology to chemical giant BASF. According to the companies, BASF is using the acquisition to extend its solutions for the display industry. Financial terms of the technology acquisition were not announced. Seasheel is led by David Schultz.

Broadcom Wins Ultra HD Android Set Top Box Design
Irvine-based Broadcom reports this morning that it has scored a design win, for what it says is the first, Ultra HD Android set-top box. Broadcom said the new box is being offered by French broadband and IPTV service provider Free. Financial impact and shipment volumes were not announced. Broadcom said the set-top box is based on its BCM7252 STB system-on-a-chip. Free has 15.4 mllion subscribers.

Guidance Software Names HR VP
Pasadena-based Guidance Software, which develops digital forensics and electronic discovery software, has named Stephanie Urbach as its new Senior Vice President, Human Resources. Urbach joins the company from Jacobs Engineering Group, and also had served at Avery Dennison, where the company said she spent over 15 years. Guidance Software said Urbach will head up its employee relations, development and training, recruiting, compensation and benefits.
