FreedomPop Opens UK Beta Signups
Los Angeles-based free mobile phone and broadband provider FreedomPop announced Wednesday that it has officially started accepting first-come, first-serve signups for its beta in the United Kingdom. FreedomPop said the free service will offer up 200 minutes, 200 texts, and 200 MB of data to users, plus free international calling. Hulu, AT&T Ink Distribution Deal
Los Angeles-based streaming television site Hulu and wireless carrier AT&T have reached a deal to offer up video-on-demand services on AT&T later this year, the two said Wednesday. Pricing on the service and details have not been announced. According to the two, AT&T will offer Hulu's subscription service on both mobile and web platforms. The two already have been offering up Hulu's free streaming service to AT&T's users.

Silversheet Gets $2.9M To Streamline Doctor Credentialing
Los Angeles-based Silversheet, led by serial entrepreneur Miles Beckett, said Wednesday that it has raised $2.9M in a funding round, to go towards its service for credentialing doctors at local hospitals. The startup said the funding came from Upfront Ventures, along ith Rincon Venture Partners, SV Angel, Slow Ventures, BAM Ventures, and Cyan and Scott Banister. Silversheet is looking to streamline the long and laborious process of getting physicians credentialed for local hospital privileges. (More info...)

NoteVault Names CMO, Sales VP
San Diego-based NoteVault, which develops a cloud-based note taking product for the commercial construction industry, has named Jeremy Foster as the company's Chief Marketing Officer, and John Roshala as its new VP of Sales. Foster was previously at Ericsson, and also worked at Vodafone New Zealand. Roshala was previously at National Powersport Auctions, and also served at XO Communications and Anonymizer. NoteVault raised a round of funding in December.

Nimble Launches App For Gmail
Santa Monica-based social customer relationship management (CRM) tool developer Nimble has launched a new set of browser apps--which runs in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox--that help tie the company's software into Gmail. aTyr Pharma Closes IPO
San Diego-based aTyr Pharma said Tuesday afternoon that it has closed its initial public offering. the company sold 6,164,000 shraes of its common stock at $14.00 per share, raising $86.25M for the company. The company is now trading on the NASDAQ Global Market as LIFE. aTyr's venture backers include Fidelity Investments, Domain Associate, Polaris Partners, Alta Partners, Cardinal Partners, and Sofinnova Ventures.

Qualcomm Backs Online Education Effort
San Diego-based Qualcomm is backing edX, a nonprofit provider of online, massive open online course (MOOC) technology, the two said this morning. According to the companies, Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Education will help edX develop its technology, by contributing engineering resources and licensing its SDK code to edX. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. edX develops online course software to more than 60 institutions, including MIT, Harvard, and Berkeley.
