Homejoy Shuts Doors To On-Demand Home Services
Homejoy, one of the many, on-demand startups serving the Los Angeles area, said today that it will be shutting down its services, and will be closing on July 31st. The company--which initially launched into Los Angeles in 2013--apparently had issues raising its next round of funding, and also had been battling a number of worker classification lawsuits over whether or not its workers should be employees. UCLA Health: Health Data From More Than 4.5 Million Patients Hacked
In the latest, high profile cyber hacking incident, Los Angeles-based UCLA Health, the healthcare and hospital system connect with UCLA, reported on Friday morning that it is the victim of a criminal cyber attack, which has exposed the records of as many as 4.5 million patients. UCLA said that "criminal hackers" have gained access to parts of the computer network that contain personal and medical information for the healthcare system. Qualcomm Backs BYOD Software Vendor Workspot
San Diego-based Qualcomm is backing bring-your-own-device (BYOD) software developer Workspot, via an investment from Qualcomm Ventures, Workspot said this week. Workspot said it raised $5M from Helion Ventures, Translink Capital, and Qualcomm Inc., to help advance its software that allows users to access their business apps and data through Windows, iOS, Android, and Mac operating systems. Hulu Planning Ad-Free Premium Subscription
Los Angeles-based streaming television site Hulu is planning to add another, premium tier to its services, which would allow users to completely skip out on advertising. According to the WSJ, Hulu is exploring adding thew new premium service at between $12.00 and $14.00 per month, allowing users to get an ad-free viewing experience--to help it better compete with Netflix. Uber, Lyft Get Approval For LAX Access
Ridesharing services Uber and Lyft may soon be able to pick up passengers at LAX, after officials voted to open up access to the airport to the third party services. Uber and Lyft--which have extensive service in Los Angeles--have been unable to pick up passengers at the airport, due to tight restrictions by the city on access to the airport. Stocktwits Adds Real Time Notifications
San Diego- and New York-based StockTwits has rolled out a way for mobile users to get selected, real-time notifications when people they follow post messages. According to Stocktwits CEO Howard Lindzon, the new feature lets users easily pick the few people they'd like to get real time notifications from, and have the posts of those few people show up in your mobile notifications. Yardi Gets Win In Singapore
Santa Barbara-based property management software developer Yardia>> has been selected by a Singapore-based, real estate investment trust, the companies said late Thursday. According to IREIT Global Group Pte. Ltd., it has selected Yardi's Voyager software-as-a-service platform to help it manage its office properties. IREIT said the software will be used for both daily operations and long term investment decisions. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed.
