XYZ: No Banned Terms List, No Chinese Censorship
Los Angeles-based domain name registrar XYZ has responded to the controversy over a Wall Street Journal editorial that claimed that the company was implementing Chinese censorship rules across all of its domains, saying that there are no restrictions on registering a .xyz domain, and that there is no "banned list" it is enforcing from China on its domains. Appetize Wins Sacramento Kings
Los Angeles-based Appetize, which develops cloud-based, point-of-sale (POS) systems, has scored a big win with the Sacramento Kings, as the Kings said it will implement the Appetize POS solution at both Sleep Train Arena and the future Golden 1 Center. Verge Genomics, Founded By UCLA Scientists, Raises $4M In Seed Funding
Verge Genomics, a biopharmaceuticals startup founded by scientists out of UCLA, said Tuesday that it has raised $4M in a seed financing round. The funding was led by IA Ventures, and also included Two Sigma Ventures, Draper Associates, Great Oaks VC, Slow Ventures, Karlin Venture, Elad Gil and David Lee. TrackR Scores $8.7M To Track Your Stuff
Santa Barbara-based TrackR, founded by UC Santa Barbara graduates Chris Herbert and Christian Smith, has raised $8.7M in a funding round, to help people track all of their stuff. The funding round was led by Foundry Group. The startup develops a line of tags, stickers, and other sensors which users can put on any of their stuff, and immediately track those items using their smartphone. U.S. Army To Recruit Dozens Of Researchers At New Campus In Playa Vista
In a bid to tap into the growing, innovative technology atmosphere in Playa Vista, the U.S. Army said Tuesday that it plans to recruit up to 70 researchers to a new campus in the growing center for technology, at the University of Southern California Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT). Patrick Soon-Shiong, Vice President Biden May Team On Cancer Cure
Los Angeles billionaire Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong and Vice President Joseph Biden are looking to team up to cure cancer for good, now that Vice President Biden has elected not to run for President. According to a report in the New York Times, Biden's interest in curing cancer stems from the loss of his son, Beau Biden, in May, to brain cancer. OncoSec Raises $7.5M In PIPE
San Diego-based OncoSec Medical said Tuesday that it has raised $7.5M in a registered direct offering, with un-named, institutional investors. The publicly traded company, which trades on the NASDAQ as ONCS, develops cancer immunotherapy products. OncoSec said it sold 2,142,860 shares of its common stock at a price of $3.50 per share to those investors, plus warrants for 1,071,430 shares of common stock at $4.50 per share for the next 5.5 years.
