Reflexion Health Finds $18M
San Diego-based Reflexion Health, a provider of cloud-based, digital medicine products, said this week that it has raised $18 in a Series B funding round. The funding came from current investor West Partners and others. The startup, led by Joseph Smith, MD, PhD, develops VERA, a software product which is aimed at the physical therapy market. Donuts Makes Hostile, $70M Bid For Rightside Group's TLDs
Domain name registration provider Donuts Inc, which provide top-level domain registration services, said it has offered to buy the entire registry of generic, top-level domains from Rightside Group, Ltd.. Donuts--which has executives and operations in Los Angeles--said it has offered to pay $70M in cash for Rightside. In what might make for an interesting process, Donuts said that it is making the offer despite Rightside "repeatedly" disregarding its interest in the company.

Platinum Equity Bumps Offer For Electro Rent To $382M
Beverly Hills-based private equity investor Platinum Equity announced this morning that it has bumped its offer for Van Nuys-based Electro Rent to $15.50 per share in cash, up from an earlier, $13.12 per share offer. The new price bumps the total value of the deal to approximately $382.2M. According to Platinum Equity, the increased offer comes due to a receipt by Electro REnt of an unsolicited, third party acquisition proposal. IBM Watson AI XPRIZE Competition Opens Registration
The IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, the $5M competition being run by Los Angeles-based XPRIZE, has opened up registrations to teams, and has published guidelines for the artificial intelligence competition. The new competition is seeking to spur teams to create artificial intelligence technology, to challenge some of humanity's most pressing challenges. HomeHero, Cedars-Sinai Link On Patient Transition Program
Santa Monica-based HomeHero, the home care technology and services startup founded by Kyle Hill and Mike Townsend, has linked up with Cedars-Sinai to launch a new program called Safe Transition Home. Qualcomm Sues Chinese Company Over Patent Licensing
San Diego-based Qualcomm has filed suit against a Chinese company, Meizu, saying that Meizu has refused to enter into a licensing deal for the company's technology. According to Qualcomm, it had attempted to negotiate with Meizu to sign a patent license agreement, consistent with Qualcomm's agreement with China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) in 2015--but that Meizu has gone ahead and used Qualcomm's technology without a patent license agreement. Study: More Than 7,620 Cybersecurity Jobs In San Diego
A new study, run by a local nonprofit focused on cybersecurity in San Diego, has tallied up the numbers and found that there are more than 7,620 people employed in the cybersecurity industry in San Diego.
