Los Angeles-based subscription box service Loot Crate said today that it has hired its first CTO, John Williams. SoCal Sees Summertime Surge In Exits
In what looks to be an unprecedented surge in high profile, high value exits for high tech companies in Southern California, there have now been six big exits in the region over the last month worth over $100M. Nervana Systems Acquired By Intel For $350M
San Diego-based Nervana Systems, a developer of artificial intelligence and "deep learning" technology, has been acquired by Intel, in a deal that is reportedly worth $350M. Nervana, which is led by Naveen Rao, was backed by DFJ, Data Collective,Playground Global, CME Ventures, Lux Capital, Allen & Co, AME Cloud Ventures, Fuel Capital, Omidyar Technology Ventures, SV Angel, and others. Disney Takes Stake In MLB Spinout BAMTech
Burbank-based The Walt Disney Company says it is acquiring a 33 percent stake in BAMTech, the new technology services and video streaming spinout of Major League Baseball (MLB). According to Disney, it will pay $1 billion in two installments, now and in January 2017, for its stake in BAMTech, which is being carved out of MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM). Soylent Rolls Out Coffiest, So You Can Live On Coffee Alone
Are you one of those folks who wished they could live on coffee alone, and nothing else? Los Angeles-based food startup Soylent has rolled out a brand new product, Coffiest, which pretty much lets you do just that. Ingenu Rolls Out M2M Network In Phoenix
San Diego-based Ingenu, a developer of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications technology, says it has rolled out its M2M network in Phoenix, Arizona. The company says its network covers more than 1,850 square miles, and is aimed at hosting smart energy, agriculture, and other sustainability applications. ReVision Optics Names R&D VP
Lake Forest-based ReVision Optics, which is developing implantable corneal inlays for vision correction, has named Nick J. Manesis, PhD, as its VP of R&D. Manesis has previously served at Allergan and CooperVision, and was most recently VP at Solaris Technology Group. Illumina Links With Software Developer FlowJo
San Diego-based Illumina announced this morning that it has partnered with FlowJo, in a deal to develop and co-market software aimed at single cell genomics. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.
