SIPphone Gets $6M
San Diego-based SIPphone has raised $6M in a round of venture capital, the firm said today SIPphone, which is developing open source voice over IP (VOIP) software, said that it received the funding from Dawntreader Ventures, and would use the funding to expand the firm's SIP services to non-PC devices such as adapters, routers, WiFi handsets, and dual mode mobile phones. The company also said that it expects to triple in size over the next year wtih hires in business development and engineering. As part of the financing round, Dawntreader will add Edward G. Sim to the company's board. SIPphone develops the open source Gizmo Project, a standard way to connect voice-over-IP. The firm is headed by former MP3.com CEO Michael Robertson.
