ViaSat, Eutelsat In Satellite Joint Venture

Carlsbad-based ViaSat and Eutelsat Communications are in a satellite broadband joint venture in Europe, the two said Tuesday, which will provide high speed Internet services in Europe. The two said they will initially use Eutelsat's KA-SAT high capacity broadband satellite, plus ViaSat's broadband technologies and consumer Internet Service Provider (ISP) business expertise in the venture, to launch a brand new, consumer retail service in Europe. The companies said that joint venture will consist of two, separate businesses, one focused on wholesale services, the other on retail services. Viasat will acquire a 49 percent interest in the wholesale business for 132.5M Euros; the retail services business will be 51 owne by Viasat and 49 percent owned by Eutelsat.
