Broadcom Targets Automotive Networks With Chip

Irvine-based Broadcom is targeting the automotive electronics market today with the release of a new product specifically aimed at automotive networks. The chip marke said today that it has launched an Ethernet PHY, which enables low-cost cabling for 100 Mbps Ethernet networks in cars. Broadcom said the chips are sampling now, with production volumes in the first half of 2012. Automotive makers have been moving towards using Ethernet networks for in-vehicle networking. In a related move, Broadcom also said its new chip is being used as part of a 360 degree, parking assistance system from OmniVision Technologies.
