Broadspire Moves Downtown
Los Angeles-based BroadSpire (www.broadspire.com) has moved its offices from Mission Hills to downtown Los Angeles. The company said that it has moved into a new facility which is capable of accomodating 35-40 employees, and made the move to support the company's growth. The headquarters move places its offices in the same building as its current Los Angeles data center.

Apricorn Ships Mini USB Hard Drive
Poway-based Apricorn (www.apricorn.com) announced the availability of a USB-based, mini 1.8 inch hard drive from the company. The company's EZ Bus Mini drive is available in 20GB and 40GB capacities and is powered directly from the USB bus, requiring no external AC adapters.

Applied DNA Sciences Appoints President
Los Angeles-based Applied DNA Sciences announced that it has appointed Peter Brocklesby as President of the company. Brocklesby was most recently at E-Systems, a developer of military and government communications, electronics, and intelligence gathering systems that is now part of Raytheon.

TransDimension Joins Ultra Wideband Group
Irvine-based TransDimension has joined the WiMedia Alliance, an industry group focused on Ultra Wideband (UWB) wireless connectivity. The WiMedia Alliance promotes wireless connectivity and interoperability, standards, and specifications for wireless multimedia devices. Transdimension is extending its line of integrated circuits, IP cores, and USB software into the UWB wireless standard space. UCI Names Computer Science School
UC Irvine announced yesterday that it has named the UCI School of Information and Computer Science for philanthropist Donald Bren, chairman of the Irvine Co. The new school will be named the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. Bren made a $20M gift to the school in December, which is being used to create 10 endowed chairs for the computer science school. Bren is a longtime contributor to the school.

PivX Acquires Security Software Provider
Newport Beach-based PivX Solutions (www.pivx.com) announced that it has acquired Tustin-based Threat Focus, in a move to expand its threat assessment tools. Threat Focus provides network vulnerability assessment tools, which will be incorporated into the PivX line of security software applications. PivX provides network security services and software.

Broadcom Taps Mobile Sound Technology
Irvine-based Broadcom (www.broadcom.com) has licensed a hardware independent audio engine from QSound Labs, for incporation into baseband processors for mobile phones and PDAs. Broadcom will incorporate the software into its processors, to enable polyphonic ring tones, video game sounds, music playback, and more. Qsound's microQ technology provides a digital audio playback engine, wavetable synthesis, as well as support for MIDI and other sound protocols.

Advanced Bionics Acquired For $740M
Valencia-based Advanced Bionics, which develops implantable microelectronics for treating neurological disorders, has been acquired by Boston Scientific Corporatio for $740M. The deal also includes earn out payments tied to performance milestones. Advanced Bionics technology includes neurostimulators, programmable drug pumps, and cochlear implants. Advanced Bionics was founded by Al Mann, who is chairman and co-CEO of the company.
