Snapchat Eyes IPO
Venice-based Snapchat, the high flying, high profile startup led by Evan Spiegel, is planning an IPO, according to Spiegel, who talked about the company's IPO plans at a conference on Tuesday. Spiegel said that an "IPO is really important" to the company. Spiegel did not give a timeframe for any IPO effort. The plans for an IPO are not a surprise, given the ultra high valuation that Snapchat has been getting in its latest private funding rounds.

MANTA Instruments Finds Funding For Scientific Instruments
La Jollla-based MANTA Instruments, a developer of technology for characterizing nanoparticles, has raised a round of seed funding, from Triton Technology Fund. Size of the funding was not announced. Triton announced the funding this morning, and said MANTA will use the funding to accelerate commercialization of its scientific instruments. SpaceX Gets Air Force Certification
Los Angeles-based SpaceX has crossed a major hurdle in its efforts to provide launch services to the U.S. Department of Defense, and has been certified by the U.S. Air Force to carry out National Security space missions, according to the USAF. Intense Lighting Acquired By Leviton
Anaheim-based Intense Lighting, a developer of LED-based lighting products, has been acquired by Leviton, Leviton said Tuesday. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. Leviton said that Intense Lighting will operate as a new, standalone business unit of the company, and continue to maintain its operations in Anaheim. Ceres Gets Soybean Gene Patent
Thousand Oaks-based agricultural biotechnology develper Ceres announced this morning that it has received a U.S. patent, covering the company's genetic sequence derived from soybean, which is aimed at producing improved soybean varieties. The company says it now has approximately 85 issued patents and numerous patent applications. Neudesic Buys Web4
Irvine-based Neudesic, which develops software and services for the enterprise market, said today that it has acquired Anaheim-based Web4, a provider of enterprise content management (ECM), human resources, and collaboration software. Financial terms of the acquisition were not announced. The companies said that Web4 will become a distinct unit of Neudesic. Neudesic is led by Parsa Rohani.
