    SIPphone Becomes Gizmo5

San Diego-based SIPphone, the company behind the open source, voice-over-IP Gizmo software, is renaming itself Gizmo5, according to CEO Michael Robertson. Robertson was the founder of MP3.com. According to Robertson, the firm decided to change its name because most people did not know SIPphone, but knew about its Gizmo Project software. In conjunction with the corporate name change, the firm is also renaming Gizmo Project to Gizmo5, and adding a new mobile phone version of the software. The Gizmo Project is a competitor to Skype and other voice-over-IP and instant messaging networks, and allows users to make Internet-based phone calls.
