YouTube Creates New $100M Fund For Children's Content Creators

In a move that may have a huge impact on the content creation business in Los Angeles, YouTube said on Wednesday that it has created a new, $100M fund, which it will disburse over the next three years, which will go towards the creation of "thoughtful, original" children's content for YouTube and YouTube Kids. The new fund comes as part of a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the New York Attorney General over its privacy policies for children. According to YouTube, that settlement means that, in about four months, it will we will treat data from anyone watching children's content on YouTube as coming from a child, regardless of the age of the user. YouTube explained that it will limit data collection and use on videos made for kids only to what is needed to support the operation of the service--meaning there will not be personalized ads, and some features, such as comments and notifications, will not be available. Because of those changes, YouTube said it expects "significant business impact on family and kids creators" due to loss of those features.
