Music Publishers Sue Twitter Over Copyrights, Seek $250M

a>, to the tune of $250M, claiming that the website has "refused to license the millions of songs on its service". The lawsuit includes a number of music publishers, including Universal Music Publishing Group, Warner Chappell Music and Sony Music Publishing. Most of those music publishers are based in the Los Angeles area. The publishers are seeking more than $250M in damages. Apparently, Twitter is refusing to respond to DMCA takedown requests for user-uploaded material which violates copyrights. The move is not the first time the recording industry has pursued a company for copyright violations; way back in the early 2000's, the Recording Industry Association of America managed to shut down music sharing site Napster using similar legal moves.
