MESoft Finds $6M
Burbank-based MESoft announced Friday afternoon that it has raised $6M in funding, from Peninsula Equity Partners and Sid R. Bass Associates. MEsoft, which develops software for managing digital media, said that it will use the funding to build out its management team, expand sales and marketing, and extend the functionality of its product line. MEsoft's products are used for the management and distribution of digital media, used for production workflow.

FreeConference.com Gets Unblocked
Los Angeles-based free conference calling firm FreeConference.com, one of the firms being blocked by major telecom carriers AT&T, Qwest, and Sprint Nextel, said today that the firm's services have been unblocked by Sprint Nextel, along with the other services. The operations of firms providing free calling services was halted earlier this month when major U.S. telecommunications carriers suddenly stopped allowing calls to the firms, which rely on toll rules to rural area codes for revenue. Broadcom Fires Another Salvo At Qualcomm
Irvine-based Broadcom has filed another lawsuit against Qualcomm, saying today that it has file new litigation against Qualcomm claiming unfair competition, fraud, and breach of contract. Broadcom said it file a 37-page complaint in the California Superior Court in Orange Count late Thursday alleging Qualcomm concealed patents, reneged on licensing obligations, and exerting dominance through hidden affiliations in industry standards bodies. Qualcomm Rejects Nokia Offer
San Diego-based Qualcomm, which is embroiled in a number of lawsuits with Nokia over patents, said Thursday that it has rejected a $20M offer from Nokia over patent royalties. The two are locked in a legal battle over Nokia's contract to use Qualcomm patents, which expired Monday. Qualcomm claimed that Nokia's attempted payment is a fraction of a royalty the two agreed upon in 2001. The two are continuing cross licensing negotations.

Affinion Group Acquires CardCops
Norwalk, Conn.-based Affinion Group said Friday morning that it has acquired Malibu-based CardCops, a provider of technology for ID theft protection, data monitoring, and analysis. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. CardCops provides ID theft services for monitoring the Internet for fradulent activity. Affinion Group is a affinity marketer and also operates security and credit monitoring services.

Iomega Adds Rack Mount Storage Device
San Diego-based Iomega announced Thursday that it has expanded its line of network attached storage (NAS) devices with a new rack-mount product. The firm's new Iomega StorCenter Pro NAS 450r supports up to 2TB in storage in a 1U form factor. The new device also includes print server capability, and is based on Microsoft's Windows Storage Server 2003. Iomega is a manufacturer of storage products.

Networkcar Appoints President
San Diego-based Networkcar, which develops wireless vehicle management systems, said earlier this week that it has appointed Keith Schneider as President of the firm. Schneider was most recently at Sprint Nextel Communications, where he was Vice President of Indirect Distribution. Networkcar develops GPS-enabled remote diagnostic systems for the automotive industry, and is a subsidiary of HUGHES Telematics.

HireRight Names Pickell Product VP
Employment screening specialist HireRight has chosen Robert Pickell as its vice president of product management, the company reported earlier this week. Pickell comes to HireRight from data storage manufacturer Quantum Corp., where he served as vice president of worldwide marketing. Before Quantum, Pickell enjoyed stints as general manager for Escrow.com and vice president of marketing for Stamps.com.
