Obama Taps Two Southern Californians For Tech, Science Advice
President Barack Obama has appointed two Southern California academics--both Nobel prize winners in Chemistry--for his Science and Technology Advisory council, saying Monday that he has selected UC San Diego professor Mario Molina and Caltech professor Ahmed Zewail to the council. Mario Molina is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diegomand the Center for Atmospheric Sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Broadcom Creates $50M Math and Science Foundation
Irvine-based Broadcom is creating a new, $50M foundation to support math and science programs, along with other community services, the firm said Monday. According to Broadcom, the new Broadcom Foundation is looking to give more than $2M annually to support mostly math and science programs, with some funding to community services where Broadcom employees live and work. Arkeia Software Ties With Falconstor
San Diego-based Arkeia Software, a developer of backup and disaster recovery software, said Monday that the firm has inked a sales, marketing, and technology partnership with Falconstor. Falconstor is a provider of data backup, mirroring, virtualization, and other data storage software. According to the firms, the deal covers use of Falconstor's Virtual Tape Library (VTL) appliance with Arkeia's backup software, Arekeia Network Backup v8, running on a virtual appliance. InteliCloud Hires Sales VP
Newport Beach-based InteliCloud, a developer of network and data center blade chassis systems, said this morning that the firm has hired on Robert J. Cohen as Vice President of Sales. Cohen joins the firm from Solutionary, Inc, and has also served at American Management Systems and Computer Associates. InteliCloud is targeting the networking and computing infrastructure market with its products.

Buzz Media Trims Staff At Idolator
Hollywood-based Buzz Media the venture backed content, media, and community site, has made more cuts, this time at the firm's Idolator blog. According to a post by one of its editors earlier this month, the site has cut "pretty much all" of Idolator's contributing writers, including columnists and daily bloggers. Buzznet bought music blog Idolator in April of last year. The cuts came despite--or perhaps because of--a recent venture round the firm raised in March.
