Clipper Windpower Gets $206M In Equity Investment
Carpinteria-based Clipper Windpower Plc, a developer of wind turbines, said this week that it has reached a deal to receive $206M in an equity investment from United Technologies Corp. UTC will also purchase up to 21.8 million Clipper shares from existing shareholders. The firms said that the move will give UTC a 49.5% stake in Clipper. Clipper is listed on the London AIM exchange.

Report: Verari Systems Shuts Down
San Diego-based Verari Systems, a developer of blade server technology, has shut down, according to publication InsideHPC. According to InsideHPC, Verari Systems shut down due to lack of access to capital. Verari had raised over $59M in funding from such investors as Carlyle Group, Celerity Partners, Sierra Ventures, and Voyager Capital.

FastSpring Trumpets Growth
Santa Barbara-based FastSpring, a firm which provides e-commerce services and payment processing for online software sellers, claims that the firm had 500% growth in its revenues in 2009. According to CEO Dan Engel, the growth was driven by new clients such as AteBits (makers of Tweetie), Mailplane, BreezeTree Software, and Moonrug (makers of Moonrug Mobile for Android). Engel did not disclose actual financials related to the firm. Engel was an executive at Picasa at the time of its acquisition (More info...)

Novatel Wireless Deploys With Orange
San Diego-based Novatel Wireless, a developer of wireless broadband devices, has deployed its MiFi wireless devices with Orange Spain, the firm said Thursday afternoon. Novatel said that Orange is launching its Novatel Wireless MiFi 2352 mobile hotspot device, via Orange's stores and online in the country. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. Novatel's device takes a cellular connection and turns it into a mini wireless hotspot, providing up to five different devices with WiFi access.
