USC Gets $1.98M In DOE Energy Efficiency Grants
The U.S. Department of Energy said this week that it has awarded more than $76M in funding, for advanced energy-efficient building technology projects and the development of training programs for commercial building equipment technicians, building operators, and energy auditors. Among recipients of funding was the University of Southern California, which received $1.98M. USC was among 58 projects focused on helping make buildings more energy efficient and cost-effective. Survey: High Demand, Maybe, For Electric Cars
A new survey released today from Ernst & Young finds that over 25% of drivers across US, Europe, China and Japan would likely consider purchasing either a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, when they are available on the market. The survey, conducted by Ernst & Young's Global Automotive Center, suggested that the interest in the vehicles could result in "more than enough demand" to sell out the estimated 2010 and 2011 production runs of those vehicles. Intrigue In Death of San Diego Angel Investor
The death earlier this month of a San Diego Tech Coast Angel, John G. Watson, who organized San Diego's Tech Coast Angels QuickPitch event, is now being investigated as a possible homicide, according to unconfirmed reports sourced by the Frank Peters Show. According to The San Diego Police have opened a homicide investigation into a suspicious death of Watson, and that it was suspected Watson was a victim of fraud and embezzlement. Broadcom Buys Innovision Research & Technology
Irvine-based Broadcom announced today that it is acquiring Innovision Research & Technology PLC, a developer of near-field technology used for short range data communications. The deal is worth approximately $47.5M in cash. Broadcom said its subsidiary Broadcom International Ltd. is making the acquisition of Innovision, which is currently listed on the London AIM. Innovision's wireless ICs are used for short range data communications between devices, such as for RFID tags.

Cornerstone OnDemand Wins Bright Horizons
Santa Monica-based Cornerstone OnDemand, a provider of software-as-a-service, learning and talent management software, said Thursday that it has added Bright Horizons Family Solutions as a customer. Cornerstone OnDemand said that Bright Horizons will use its software to manage and develop its 20,000 employees. Bright Horizons is an operator of employer-sponsored child care programs. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed.
