Materia Gets NIH Funding Grant
Pasadena-based Materia, the developer of olefin metathesis catalyst technology developed at the California Institute of Technology, said this week that it has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH), Phase II funding grant. Amoumt of the grant was not disclosed. The firm said that the grant will go towards the continued development of functional polymers for use in organic synthesis, and is a joint effort between the company and Professor Paul Hanson of the University of Kansas. Qualcomm Re-Ups Investment In Mobile Management Firm Visage
San Diego-based Qualcomm has renewed its investment in Visage, as part of a Series C funding for the enterprise mobility management software provider. According to Visage, the round was led by Motorola Solutions, and also included Palisades Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures and Worldview Technology Partners. Qualcomm was the lead on the February 2010 round for Visage, whose software is used to manage the security and mobile policy for enterprise customers.

SoCal Venture Capitalists Shut Out Of Midas List
Forbes Magazine has just published its annual Midas List, its annual ranking of the top 100 venture capitalists, and -- despite a record number of IPOs and exits last year from southern California technology companies -- Southern California's venture capital community was shut out of the list entirely. YouTube Announces New Shows From Maker Studios, Machinima
Online video site YouTube said yesterday that it has launched a new set of original shows and channels, including two from Southern California's entertainment talent pool. NetPlenish Launches, Lands $1.9M

Boingo To Deploy In New York's Subway System
Los Angeles-based Boingo, which operates a network of Wi-Fi internet access hotspots worldwide, has inked another deal to manage and operate Wi-Fi services. This time, the company said it has reached an agreement with Transit Wireless to manage the Wi-Fi services within the New York City Subway System. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Topspin Partners With TuneCore
Los Angeles-based Topspin, the developer of music marketing software and services for artists, which is led by former Yahoo Music GM Ian Rogers, has linked with music and video distribution company TuneCore, the firm said today. Topspin said the two are in technical integration which will auto-deliver music from Topspin to Tunecore, or from TuneCore to Topspin, without a new upload. Gaikai Partners On Gaming Tablet
Los Angeles-based cloud gaming service provider Gaikai is in a deal to take its technology to a "gaming tablet" the firm said today, and has signed a partnership with firm Wikipad. According to the firms, they will offer an attachable, console-quality gamepad control, which integrates Gaikai's cliento into the tablet. Nirvanix Gets $25M In Series C
San Diego-based cloud storage provider Nirvanix announced this morning that it has raised over $25M in a Series C funding round, which it says will go to "significantly expand" its engineering organization. The round was led by Khosla Ventures, and also included Valhalla Partners, Intel Capital, Mission Ventures and Windward Ventures, all existing investors in the company.
