Eucalpytus Acquired By HP For Around $100M
Santa Barbara-based Eucalpytus, the developer of open source software for managing private and hybrid clouds, has been acquired by HP, HP said Thursday afternoon. Financial terms of the buy were not disclosed, however, reports place the buy at somewhere under $100M. Eucalpytus, which is led by Marten Mickos, was venture backed by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP), Benchmark Capital, BV Capital, and New Enterprise Associates. The company had raised at least $55.5M in funding.

Rowl Launches Social Discovery App
Santa Monica-based Rowl said this week that it has launched a new, mobile app which helps users find new music, sports, comedy, and other events, in a social way. Rowl, led by Fred E. Tannous, said the app will focus on helping users follow their friends, and favorite artists and celebrities, to see what they are up to. The startup has linked up with country music star Hunter Hayes to promote the free iOS app. The app notifies users when a favorite band, DJ, or comedian will be performing nearby (More info...)

Gem Takes On Bitcoin APIs
Venice, California-based Gem said this week that it has launched a new, Bitcoin platform specifically aimed at developers. According to Gem, it offers up a platform which can be used to secure Bitcoin and other digital currencies, using such techniques as multi-factor device authentication, fraud and identification monitoring, offline key backup, and more. Vision Internet Gets Private Equity Investment
Santa Monica-based Visio Internet, which develops Internet sites for governments, has raised a round of growth capital, according to the company. The funding came from Caltius Equity Partners. Size of the investment was not disclosed. As part of the funding, Vision Internet said it has named David M. Nachman as its CEO. Nachman is the former Chief Business Officer of Velocify, and also served at Marlin Equity Partners, Phoenix Energy Technologies, McKinsey and Company, and Kidder, Peabody & Comp (More info...)

Boingo Wireless Launches Wi-Fi At Phoenix Sky Harbor
Los Angeles-based wireless networking operator Boingo Wireless is continuing to grow its footprint at airports, saying Wednesday that it is behind an upgraded, Wi-Fi network at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Boingo Wireless said PHX is now offering up a new, 802.11ac Wi-Fi network, which provides complimentary, ad-supported Wi-Fi to visitors, along with premium Wi-Fi services. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed.

Ixia Gets Extension On Filings
Calabasas-based Ixia has received a slight reprieve from delisting and requirements to meet NASDAQ stock market requirements for filings. The company said late Wednesday that the NASDAQ Stock Market has granted an extension from September 12th to November 13th for the company to become current in its filings. The company--which will be delisted if it fails to meet the new deadline--has been trying to become current with all of its financial reports, after a restatement effort at the company.
