SpaceX Scores $886M From FCC For High Speed Rural Broadband

Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX, which is developing its own constellation of thousands of satellites to provide Internet service to earth, has been selected to receive $886M from the FCC to deploy high speed broadband to the rural United States. According to the FCC, SpaceX was among 180 companies to receive part of $9.2 billion to bring high speed broadband to underserved rural areas across the US. The award--which will be given out over the next decade--covers supplying broadband to 642,925 locations across 35 states. SpaceX was not the only local company to reap part of the rural broadband benefits; Camarillo-based GeoLinks, for example, which supplies broadband Internet via wireless links, received $234.8M for providing connectivity to 128,297 locations across 3 states.
