Viasat Rolls Out Cheaper, Home Satellite Internet

Carlsbad-based Viasat has rolled out new, lower-priced home satellite Internet plans, as the company has begun to see competition from SpaceX's Starlink satellite service. According to Viasat, it will offer up "New Choice" home internet plans, starting at $49.99 per month, with download speeds up to 25Mbps and 150Mbps in select areas. The company is targeting residential customers, particularly in rural areas. SpaceX's competing--but pricier--satellite Internet delivers 100 to 250Mbps download speeds, with nearly 50Mbps upload speeds. ViaSat said its New Choice home internet plans are available today in select markets, with eventual plans to roll the service out nationwide.
