Fotolog Taps Userplane For Community Tools
New York-based Fotolog, a popular online photo blogging community, said today that it will use Los Angeles-based Userplane's web messaging tools for its web site. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, however the two said they will share advertising revenues generated by the products. Fotolog said it will integrate the full range of Userplane's chat, instant messaging, and video messaging products for its web site. Apptix Acquires WebMessenger
Herndon, Va.-based Apptix, a provider of unified communications systems for the business market, said today that it has acquired Los Angeles-based WebMessenger. The deal was worth $7M in a combination of cash and stock. WebMessenger was founded in 1993, and will be used to expand Apptix's portfolio of hosted email, collaboration, and voice products. $4M of the deal was in cash. According to Apptix, the acquisition closed on April 30th.

Leadpoint Adds $2.5M
Los Angeles-based Leadpoint, a firm that develops an online marketplace for buying and selling leads, has pulled in $2.5M as part of a $3.53M Series D round, according to a regulatory filing cited by publication Private Equity Week. Marc Diana, CEO and founder of Leadpoint, told socalTECH that he had no comments at the current time on the report. Cluepedia Scores Angel Round
Santa Ana-based Cluepedia, a company that develops a web-based viral marketing services, has quietly raised $428K in an angel round, socalTECH has learned. The funding came from the Tech Coast Angels, but has not been announced. According to the Tech Coast Angels, the firm provides web based viral / peer-to-peer marketing. The funding was raised earlier in Q1.

Break.com Partners For Online Horror Show
Los Angeles-based Break.com, the online web site focused on entertainment for men, and Twisted Pictures, the horror/thriller division of Evolution Entertainment, said today that the two are in a deal to product an online horror film, "The Internet Killer". The new film will be released in the form of 30 webisodes, and incorporate user input to guide the content. The deal was packaged by Ubiquity Partners. Aptiv Digital Releases IPG Products
Burbank-based Aptiv Digital, a subsidiary of Gemstar-TV Guide International, said today that it has debuted a new line of interactive programming guide products. The firm said that it has released new versions of its Passport, Passport DCT, and Passport Echo systems, which are used by cable TV operators to provide programming guides on set top boxes. The company's products run on a variety of set top box platforms.

Networks In Motion Reports Subscriber Growth
Aliso Viejo-based Networks In Motion, a developer of wireless location-based services, is trumpeting today that it has exceeded one million paid users of its services. Networks In Motion said that those subscribers are paying $9.99 per month, or $2.99 per day for its turn-by-turn, voice-promted navigation system. The company's system is being offered by Verizon Wireless, Alltel, and TELUS to their subscribers. CyberDefender Rolls Anti-Phishing Toolbar
Los Angeles-based CyberDefender, a firm providing free PC security software products, announced a new browser plug-in today focused on providing anti-phishing warnings. The firm said that its new safeSEARCH Toolbar works on versions 5.0 or higher of Microsoft Internet Explorer. CyberDefender is a provider of a free, ad-supported virus and spyware scanning tool.

724 Solutions Taps Austin Ventures For Expanded Board
Santa Barbara-based 724 Solutions said this morning that it has appointed Kari-Pekka (K.P.) Wilska of Austin Ventures to its board of directors. The firm, which provides mobile data communications services, is wholly owned by Austin Ventures. Wilska is a Venture Partner at Austin Ventures, and also sits on the board of directors of Brightpoint, Mavenir Systems, Paragon Wireless, and PulseWave RF. Wilska has also previously served as President of Nokia.
