u-Nav Acquired By Atheros
Irvine-based u-Nav Microelectronics, a firm which develops global positioning system (GPS) chipsets, has been acquired by Santa Clara-based Atheros Communications. Atheros said late Thursday that it will pay $54M for u-Nav, made up of $15.4M in cash plus 1.28 million shares of Atheros common stock. The deal also includes an undisclosed milestone payout to shareholders. According to Atheros, the deal is expected to close this year. Nirvanix Gets Win With Facebook App Provider
San Diego-based online storage firm Nirvanix said Thursday that it has been selected by FreeDrive, a firm which provides a Facebook file sharing widget. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. FreeDrive has a Facebook application which allows users of the popular social networking web site to share photos, videos, music, and documents with their friends. SIPphone Becomes Gizmo5
San Diego-based SIPphone, the company behind the open source, voice-over-IP Gizmo software, is renaming itself Gizmo5, according to CEO Michael Robertson. Robertson was the founder of MP3.com. According to Robertson, the firm decided to change its name because most people did not know SIPphone, but knew about its Gizmo Project software. In conjunction with the corporate name change, the firm is also renaming Gizmo Project to Gizmo5, and adding a new mobile phone version of the software. The Gizm (More info...)

j2 Buys RapidFax
Los Angeles-based j2 Global Communications said early this morning that it has acquired the RapidFax business of Easylink Services International. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. j2 Global said that the financial impact of the deal on the firm is immaterial. RapidFax provided online FAX-to-email services for consumers. Easylink, based in New Jersey, provides FAX services for corporations.

DIRECTV Buys ReplayTV
El Segundo-based DIRECTV has acquired the assets of ReplayTV, a developer of digital video recorders, according to ReplayTV's parent company. D&M Holdings, which is based in Tokyo, did not disclose financial terms of the deal. However, the firm said that it has sold most of its assets of ReplayTV to DIRECTV Group. D&M Holdings said it will continue to handle existing service contracts for current subscribers.

Interlink Appoints New VP
Camarillo-based Interlink Electronics, a developer of e-signature capture hardware, said today that it has promoted Rodney G. Vesling to Senior Vice President of its e-Transactions business. Vesling was most recently VP of Sales and Marketing for its e-Transactions and Specialty Components business. Vesling has previously served at Plasmon and Eastman Kodak Company. Interlink develops hardware used for capturing electronic signatures.
