SocialBuy.com Launches Group Buying Site
Los Angeles-based SocialBuy is launching a new, online group buying site in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is hoping to provide discounted local products and services, the firm said this week. According to the firm, it will provide daily deals on products from such brands as Sprinkles Cupcakes, Sunset Tan, PinkBerry, Dolce Group, ZaZa Nails, Yo Cup and Lava Lounge, along with other local retailers. Google Funds LA, San Diego, Santa Barbara Researchers
Search engine giant Google announced Tuesday that the firm is funding a number of University research projects, including a group of researchers at UC San Diego, a researcher at UC Santa Barbara, and a researcher in Los Angeles. Google said that the firm is awarding a total of $5.7M as part of its Google Focused Research Awards, to help fund research in ares of study that are of key interest to the company. SystemWare Acquired by Defense Integrator CACI
Camarillo-based SystemWare, a provider of signals acquisition and analysis systems used for cyber security, has been acquired by defense integrator CACI International. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Both SystemWare and CACI serve the Department of Defense, intelligence, and other federal agencies. CACI said that SystemWare had revenues of $16M for calendar year 2009. SystemWare was advised by Santa Monica-based Mentor Capital in the deal.

Emergent Game Technologies Sees Growth, Profits
Calabasas-based Emergent Game Technologies, developer of the computer game development software Gamebryo LightSpeed, reported today that it had a 35 percent increase in revenues year-over-year, and a 58 percent increase in its profitability during 2009. The privately held, venture backed firm did not disclose actual financial behind the numbers, but claimed that it was seeing "rapid adoption" of its products worldwide. Broadcom Adds Bluetooth 3.0 Support
Irvine-based semiconductor maker Broadcom said this morning that it has added support for the new, Bluetooth v3.0 + HS (High Speed) specification across its line of Bluetooth and InConcert chips and modules. The additional support provides speeds of up to 24 Mbps, using 802.11n WLAN radio. Anthem Ventures Gets Exit At Siperian
Santa Monica-based Anthem Ventures, the venture capital firm run by Bill Woodward, has scored an exit with portfolio firm Siperian, as Informatica said last week that it would buy the maker of data integration software for $130M in cash. Anthem Ventures was the original investor in Siperian, which was also one of Anthem's first investments, out of its Anthem Venture Partners I fund. Samit Varma at Anthem represented the firm as on Siperian's board of directors.

Clicker.com Links With UCLA
Los Angeles-based Clicker Media, the online video guide service funded by Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures, said that it has linked with the University of California, Los Angeles, with a branded version of the service specifically for UCLA students. Sendio Deploys In Nebraska
Newport Beach-based Sendio, a developer of email appliances used to reduce unwanted emails and spam, reported yesterday that it has signed the City of Lincoln, Nebraska as a customer. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Sendio said that the city replaced a Trent Micro email filter with its products. Sendio is venture backed by Athenian Venture Partners, Vicente Capital Partners, Shepherd Ventures and Momentum Venture Management.

Soliant Energy Names DeMiroz COO, CFO
Monrovia-based solar concentrator firm Soliant Energy said today that it has hired back Marco DeMiroz, as the firm's Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. DeMiroz was previously interim CEO at the firm, and an advisor to the firm. The company said that DeMiroz will report to Terry Bailey, the firm's CEO, who replaced DeMiroz in October. Bccthis Gets $500K, Launches Communications Tool
Los Angeles-based Bccthis, a startup developing software which connects Microsoft Outlook, Twitter, and BlackBerry smart phones, announced this morning that it has raised $500,000 in seed funding and launched a beta of its service. Source of the seed funding was not disclosed.
