Townhang Raises $700,000, Launches Event Discovery Site
A new, Los Angeles-based startup, Townhang.com, announced Wednesday that it has raised $700,000, and launched a new site to help people find interesting events, happenings, and activities in their city. The startup--founded by Alexey Karpov--said the funding came via equity crowdfunding efforts by the company. Instacanvas Becomes Twenty20
Los Angeles-based Instacanvas, the Muckerlab startup which provided a way for users to print their photos to canvas, swizzled its name, and business Wednesday, saying that it has renamed itself as Twenty20. According to the company, the switch came to elevate the photos and media being featured on the site "above social media", and to help get those photos in front of more people. Desktone Acquired By VMware
Desktone, the developer of virtual desktop software which had been founded by Los Angeles entrepreneur Eric Pulier, has been acquired by VMware. VMware announced the acquisition yesterday, but did not disclose financial details of the acquisition. Desktone's software is used to deliver Windows-based desktops to virtual desktops and other devices. Pulier founded Desktone back in 2006; he also is founder and Chairman of LA's SOA Software. DoubleBeam Powers Rental Payment Service
Los Angeles-based DoubleBeam, a provider of payment technology, including mobile check- and credit card capture technologies, has signed up a new customer in the rental payments area. DoubleBeam said it has signed up YapStone, a provider of electronic payment solutions to the property management and nonprofit area, to power a mobile application called RentPayment. The Search Agency: Smartphones, Tablets Now One-Third Of Google Clicks

Nativo Snags Yahoo VP As New Executive
Los Angeles-based native advertising provider Nativo said Tuesday that it has named Jay Freedman, a former VP at Yahoo, as its new Chief Revenue Officer. According to Nativo, Freedman was most recently in charge of Yahoo's Technology and Telecom Vertical, and also had been at Interclick. Local Corporation Names Technology VP
Irvine-based online directory and digital marketing provider Local Corporation said this morning that it has appointed Joe Lindsay as its new Vice President of Technology. Lindsay was most recently VP of Engineering from Brand Affinity Technologies, and also had previously served at such companies as Adforce, Secured Funding Corp, eBuilt, Autobytel, and IBM. Local said that Lindsay will focus on mobile development and the company's Krillion local shopping platform.
