FreedomPop Launches Tablets
Los Angeles-based free phone and data service provider FreedomPop is expanding out its service, saying this week that it has started offering up iPad Mini and Samsung Tab 3 tablets on the service. According to FreedomPop, the service will also let users with existing LTE support move their tablets to the service, which will provide 500MB of LTE data, 200 voice minutes, and 500 texts a month for free. Cynvenio, CollabRx Team On Cancer Therapy Tool
Westlake Village-based Cynvenio, a developer of cancer diagnostics and biomarker monitoring technology, and cloud-based expert system maker CollabRx have teamed up with a new, web-based cancer decision support application, according to the two. According to the companies, the two have tied Cynvenio's ClearID genomic test with cancer decision support software from CollabRx, which will help breast cancer patients and their physicians understand treatment options. SpaceX Plants Long Term Roots In LA
It looks like Hawthorne-based SpaceX is confident it will keep its headquarters in Hawthorne for quite a long time--despite setting up a commercial launch facility in Texas this week--based on details on the recent sale of the company's leased headquarters---at 1 Rocket Road in Hawthorne--to a commercial real estate investment trust. Warner Media Camp Graduates Second Class
What do you get when you combine a technology investment demo day with a Hollywood-style story pitch session? It might look a little like Demo Day for Warner Media Camp, the startup incubator program being run out of Los Angeles by Turner/Warner Bros.. The program graduated six companies out of its internal incubator program Monday, showing them off at a Demo Day. San Diego's Mapp Bio Behind Experimental Ebola Drug
A San Diego-based biopharmaceuticals startup, Mapp Biopharmaceuticals, is the source of the experimental Ebola treatment that has been given to the two Americans who are being treated for the dreaded disease, according to CNN. Mapp Pharmaceuticals, which is developing monoclonal antibodies to treat Ebola, uses antibodies manufactured in Nicotiana plants for its ZMapp compound, which is aimed at preventing the entry of the Ebola virus into cells. FlikMedia Goes Public Via Reverse Merger
Santa Monica-based mobile dating app developer Flikdate has gone public, via a reverse merger into a shell company called CrossBox, according to the firms today. According to FlikMedia, the company has acquired Flikdate through a merger transaction, and has changed its OTCBB trading symbol from CBXX to FLKM. The new company is led by Nick Bicanic. Toggle Finds Funding From Warner Bros.
Toggle, a new startup creating HDMI-based dongles to allow consumers to purchase movies and other videos using UltraViolet, has raised a seed round of funding from Warner Bros., the company announced last night. The company--led by Adam Johnson--is looking to promote the use of Warner's Ultraviolet movie storage service in retail channels. Polar Pro Expands To Microphones
Newport Beach-based Polar Pro, the startup provider of GoPro accessories and photo filters, is expanding into a new area today, with the launch of a microphone for the GoPro. The company, led by Jeff Overall, said its newest product is the ProMic, a microphone kit specifically aimed at helping GoPro owners capture high quality audio. Kofax Wins Big Order In Australia
Irvine-based document management software developer Kofax reported a big contract win this morning in Australia, saying an Australian bank has signed a $1M order for its software. Name of the bank was not announced. Kofax said the bank is using its software for automating processing of mortage applications and ancillary documents. Kofax said the deal includes $1M in software license revenue, and over $200,000 in maintenance and other service fees.

Ethertronics Snags Manian As COO
San Diego-based Ethertronics, a developer of antenna and RF technology, has snagged technology veteran Vahid Manian as its new Chief Operating Officer, the company said today. Manian was most recently at Entropic, serving as SVP Global Enginnering and Operations, and also previously has served at Telegent Systems and Broadcom. At Broadcom, he was SVP Global Manufacturing Operations.
