    Qualcomm Loses Patent Infringement Suit

San Diego-based wireless giant QUALCOMM has been ordered to pay $19.6M in damages to Irvine-based Broadcom, after a jury found that QUALCOMM's products infringe on three patents owned by Broadcom Corp. The loss came in a lawsuit filed by Broadcom in May of 2005, which alleged that five of its patents had been infringed by Qualcomm. The patents involved in the suit were U.S. Patents Nos. 6,847,686; 6,389,010; and 5,657,317, which involve technology used for cell phone features, including video encoding, connectivity between wireless terminals, and wireless LAN technology. Qualcomm said that it will challenge the jury's findings and appeal if necessary.
