DivX Appoints New CTO
San Diego-based video codec firm DivX said Wednesday afternoon that it has appointed Markus Moenig as the firm's Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Moenig is the founder of MainConcept, which DivX acquired last November. DivX said its current CTO, Chris Russell, will continue to assist the company in a consulting role. MainConcept was a supplier of H.264 video codecs. According to DivX, Moenig will run its global engineering organization and oversee development of its technology (More info...)

Cianna Medical Gets $9M
Aliso Viejo-based Cianna Medical said yesterday that it has raised $9M in a Series A funding round. The company, which is a spinout of BioLucent, said the funding will go towards further commercialization of the firm's breast brachytherapy technology. Investors in the firm include Fog City Fund, Windamere Venture Partners, and unnamed individuals. Cianna's technology provides a shortened course of high-dose radiation therapy for treating early stage breast cancer.

Peerless Buys Prism Software
El Segundo-based Peerless Systems said today that it is in a definitive agreement to buy Prism Software, a firm which develops document management software. According to Peerless, it will pay $1.75M in cash, plus up to $1.5M in Peerless common stock dependent on certain conditions. The deal also includes additional earn out over three years. Integrien Adds Apptio's Gupta As Advisor
Irvine-based Integrien, which develops software for systems management and IT monitoring, said Tuesday that it has added Sunny Gupta to the firm's Strategic Advisory Board. Gupta is CEO of Apptio, and was previously EVP of Products at Opsware. Gupta also founded and headed IT automation software marker iConclude. Integrien said that Gupta will help the firm as a strategic resource. Integrien is venture backed by Acartha Group, Clearstone Venture Partners, and the Tech Coast Angels.

THQ Dodges Options Trouble
Agoura Hills-based entertainment software publisher THQ has dodged issues over its stock options grants, saying today that the firm has been informed by the SEC that no action is recommended against the firm. THQ said that the staff of the SEC notified THQ that the agency's investigation into THQ's stock option grant practices has been completed, and that the staff does not intend to recommend any action against THQ. THQ has been under scrutiny for its stock options grants since August of 2006.

Ortiva Appoints Lee VP
La Jolla-based Ortiva Wireless, a provider of delivery services for mobile content, said Tuesday that it has appointed Craig Y. Lee as the firm's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development. Lee has previously served as a VP at Nuera Communications, and has worked at Ameritech Corporation. Ortiva said Lee will be responsible for strategic marketing, business development, and partner initiatives. CallWave Names Marketing Exec
Santa Barbara-based CallWave said Tuesday that it has appointed a new Chief Marketing Officer at the firm. According to Callwave, Richard Roberts has been appointed to the role to help shape the future direction of CallWave. Roberts has previously served at CNET, SendMe Mobile, ZipRealty and Zing Networks, along with Grey Advertising, Pfizer, and BMG Direct. CallWave is a provider of integrated communications, electronic FAX, and other services.

ESET Adds Windows Server 2008 Support
San Diego-based ESET has added support for Microsoft's Windows Server 2008 operating system, the firm said today. ESET, which develops security software and anti-virus products, said that ESET NOD32 AntiVirus and its other products now support Microsoft's latest server operating system, in addition to Vista and XP service packs. ESET's software is used by companies to detect and remove viruses; the upgraded software is available for download by registered users on ESET's web site.
