Venture Capital Totals $603.2M In Southern California In Q3
Venture capital investments in Southern California for Q3 of 2011 are up from last year, but down from last quarter, according to the latest numbers from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on data provided by Thomson Reuters. The latest MoneyTree report from the three find that $603.2M was invested in Q 3in Southern California companies, up from the same quarter last year, when only $443.8M was invested in the region. Livefyre, Backed by Paige Craig, Scores More Funding
San Francisco-based Livefyre, one of the many companies backed by prolific Los Angeles angel investor Paige Craig, has scored a new round of funding, the firm said today. LiveFyre said it raised $4.5M in a Series B round, led by Greycroft Partners and also including Cue Ball, HillsVen Group, and ff Venture Capital. K5Launch Launches Venture Accelerator
Irvine-based K5Launch, a new venture accelerator started by angel investors Amir Banafatemi, Ray Chan, David Cheng, and Kai Tao, is looking to spawn the growth of startups in Southern California, saying today that it has launched its efforts in the area. Superplay Takes On Social, Mobile Games
Laguna Beach-based Superplay Games, a new social and mobile games developer, said this morning that it has launched its first mobile title, Cosmonauts. The new title, which runes on Apple iOS devices and Android, is free. Superplay said it was founded by veterans from Electronic Arts, Petroglyph, Oddworld Inhabitants and Turbine, and is headed by Paul Della Bitta. Xirrus Powers Gillette Stadium
Thousand Oaks-based Xirrus, the developer of high performance wireless access points, reported today that it has deployed its products in Gillette Stadium, the home of the New England Patriots. According to Xirrus, its wireless network will serve premium seating areas, as part of the Gillette Stadium Putnam Club. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. Qualcomm Backs Siklu
San Diego-based Qualcomm has invested in an Israeli developer of carrier-grade, millimeter wave Gigabit Ethernet radios, used for wireless backhaul. According to Skilu, it has raised $19M in a Series B investment, which included Amiti Ventures, Qualcomm, and an undisclosed strategic investors. The firm's prior investors, DFJ Tamir Fishman Ventures, Evergreen Venture Partners, and Argonaut Private Equity also participated in the funding. Qualcomm's investment was led by Nagraj Kashyap.

X1 Discovery Ships Social Media Discovery Software
Pasadena-based X1 Discovery, the Idealab-backed electronic discovery firm split out from X1, said today that it has shipped its first product, X1 Social Discovery. The firm said its new product is specifically designed to address social media content, and collects Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin information for use as social media evidence for investigators. DTS Expands In Singapore
Calabasas-based DTS, the developer of surround sound and other audio technology, announced today that it has opened up a new office in Singapore. According to the firm, the new office will provide both research and development as well customer service. DTS said the new facility is located in close proximity to many of the firm's significant customers, and will support local partners and the Asian market.
