DexCom Expands Board
San Diego-based DexCom, which develops continuous glucose monitoring systems for the hospital industry, said this week that it has named Eric Topol, M.D., to its board. Topol is the Director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute. Dr. Topol has also served as a professor at Case Western, and served at the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Cleveland Clinic; he also is on the board of Triage Wireless.

Abraxis BioScience Swizzles CFO
Los Angeles-based Abraxis Bioscience reported Friday that it has appointed Rick Rodgers as the firm's Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Rodgers replaces current CFO, David O'Toole. Rodgers was most recently SVP, Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer at MGI Pharma, and has also served at MedSource Technology, ADC TElecommunications, and Arthur Anderson & Co. Reason for the departure of O'Toole was not given. Abraxis is a biotechnology firm focused on treating cancer.

Specific Media Ties With Automotive Firm
Irvine-based Specific Media said Friday that the firm has entered into an online advertising partnership with an automotive dealer group, MileOne Automotive. According to Specific Media, MileOne will target automotive shoppers across its networks for its retail dealers. Financial impact of the deal was not disclosed. MileOne Automotive owns 63 retail automobile franchises in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Specific Media operates an online, targeted online advertising network.

Scoperta Adds $1.4M
San Diego-based Scoperta, which is developing fabless specialty steel technology utilizing scrap materials, has raised $1.4M out of a $1.875M round, according to a regulatory filing. Other details on the funding have not been released, however, the firm is backed by Enterprise Partners and Vista Ventures, and Drew Senyei of Enterprise sits on the firm's board of directors. Helixis Raises $5.3M
Carlsbad-based Helixis, a developer of nucleic acid analysis tools based on technology spun out of Caltech, has raised $5.3M out of a ongoing, $10.0M venture round. According to a regulatory filing, some of the funds involved in the deal include Advanced Technology Ventures VII and Domain Partners VII. Helixis has previously received funding from ATV, Domain Associates, and Okapi Venture Capital. The firm has not provided any other details of the equity funding.

Cyber Rain: Water Conservation Driving Firm
Diane Schulz, CEO of Westlake Village-based Cyber-Rain, a venture backed developer of smart irrigation controllers, says that the recent increase in awareness of water conservation issues, plus increases in water rates are driving more customers to the firm. Schulz discussed the firm's recent $792K fund raise with socalTECH recently, saying that the round came from its existing investors, including Momentum Ventures, Funk Ventures, and the Tech Coast Angels, as well as a few other new investors. Evolution Robotics Retail Gains Reseller
Pasadena-based Evolution Robotics Retail has signed on reseller for the firm's object recognition technology for grocery stores, LaneHawk, the firm's reseller, StoreNext Retail Technologies, said this week. According to StoreNext, which supplies independent grocers and groery chains with IT and POS hardware, it will integrate Evolution Robotics Retail's product into its POS solutions. Overland Extends Into Business Continuity
San Diego-based Overland Storage, a developer of data backup hardware and software, said earlier this week that it has introduced a new product targeted at the business continuity space. The firm said that it is now shipping an appliance which will provide small and medium sized businesses with continuous local backup and remote disaster recovery.
