CinemaNow Acquired By Sonic Solutions
Marina Del Rey-based Internet video-on-demand firm CinemaNow has been acquired by Sonic Solutions, Sonic said late Wednesday afternoon. According to Sonic Solutions, it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire CinemaNow, which will be combined with Sonic's Qlix team to create a new Premium Content Group. Docstoc Hires Two Execs
Santa Monica-based business document sharing site Docstoc.com has made two executives hires, saying Wednesday that it has hired Robyn Ward as Vice President of Business Development, and Serena Ehrlich as Director of Marketing. Ward was most recently VP of Operations and Strategy at Verified Person; Ehrlich was most recently in sales, marketing, and management at Business Wire. ReachLocal Opens UK Office
Woodland Hills-based ReachLocal said late Tuesday that it has expanded into the United Kingdom, and opened up a new office in London. ReachLocal, which provides services that help local businesses buy search engine advertising, said it has launched ReachLocal UK Ltd., which will offer its local online marketing solutions to small and medium-sized businesses in the UK. SoCal Firms In X PRIZE Auto Contest
Los Angeles-based X Prize Foundation said today that it has signed up 22 teams in the firm's Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, including two Southern California teams. The prize, which is looking to award $10M to a team which develops a 100 MPG, super fuel-efficient vehicle, said that among the 22 teams which have registered for the prize are Idealab-backed Aptera Motors, based in Carlsbad, and Santa Ana-based Kinetix Motors. Fulcrum Gets Win At Storage Manufacturer
Calabasas-based Fulcrum Microsystems, a developer of switch interconnect chips, has scored a win with storage hardware manufacturer Panasas, the firm said Wednesday. Fulcrum said that Panasas is using its FocalPoint 10GbE switch chips in its newest 10 Gigabit Ethernet clustered storage switching product. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. You2Gov Looks To Help Nonprofits, Businesses Lobby Politicians
Los Angeles-based You2Gov.com is looking to extend the firm's online tools to small businesses, nonprofits, trade associations, and lobbying firms, saying Tuesday that it has created a new way for organization to use its tools. According to You2Gov, the firm will help organizations load their databases into the firm's site, provide a private login page for those organizations, and give those groups a free listing on the site. Specific Media Launches New Ad Product
Irvine-based Specific Media is targeting print advertisers with a new product, which it is calling Dynamic Circular. According to Specific Media, the new offering will help retailers to quickly and easily take their print circular advertisements, and turn them into targeted online display ads. Specific Media said it will use existing weekly print circulars, and automatically turn that content into specific online advertising, and served up to a targeted audience in its network. Citysearch Goes Mobile, Connects With Facebook
West Hollywood-based Citysearch, which is a unit of IAC, has rolled out a mobile version of the firm's site. Citysearch said today that its new Mobile by Citysearch site is in beta, and will allow users to add reviews and pull information about business listings from cell phones. RealD Opens European Offices
Los Angeles-based 3D theater projection firm RealD is expanding in Europe, saying Tuesday that it has hired on Bob Mayson as Managing Director of RealD Europe. RealD said that Mayson will lead the firm's European team, overseeing sales, customer service, and operations. RealD develops 3D projection technology which works in conjunction with digital theater equipment to project the recent crop of 3D films from Hollywood. QLogic Gets Win At Government Lab
Aliso Viejo-based storage networking hardware provider QLogic said Tuesday that the firm has been selected by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for an Infiniband install. Financial impact of the win was not disclosed. QLogic said that it has been selected to provide the InfiniBand infrastructure for the Department of Energy's Hyperion supercomputer cluster project. Boingo Expands Network In Ireland
Los Angeles-based Wi-Fi provider Boingo Wireless has expanded its network again, this time with a deal in Ireland, the firm disclosed Tuesday. Boingo said that the firm has added 950 wireless hotspots in the country of Ireland, through a deal with eircom, a local Wi-Fi provider. Boingo said the move adds most airports in the country, train stations, 200 hotels, and 350 popular restaurants and cafes in Ireland. Financial details behind the deal were not disclosed.
